Stock Gumshoe Grovels Again!
January 27th, 2008   by StockGumshoe[Warning to the Stock Gumshoe Irregulars and contributors — you’ve heard this before!]
Today you have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor with a shocking new discovery that will change your life forever!
And all it will cost you is about $1 a week. I think that’s what a packet of sugar costs at Starbucks.
OK, so that’s not really true. And I apologize for acting like the newsletter publishers I follow.
But the $1 a week part is true — I’m asking you to send me some money, to put it bluntly.
If you don’t want to make ongoing contributions, or read any more of my pathetic plea for funding, you can also just quickly send a few bucks via Paypal (which takes any credit card) — just use this link or just use your paypal account to send money to ilovestockspam@gmail.com … thanks!
And rest assured that I really hope you will continue to read the site and participate in the site and forum, whether you decide to make these entirely voluntary contributions or not.
I have many loyal readers who have been willing to pitch in a few dollars for the Gumshoe — from $2 to $200, the contributions have been very much appreciated.
But at the beginning of this delightful year, it’s now time for my renewed begging efforts. For those of you who have already heard this pitch, or who are already contributors or have made the decision not to contribute, I’m very sorry to bother you with it again. Especially those of you who have already contributed … but this is the easiest way to reach all my new readers who haven’t yet heard me grovel for cash. I promise not to ask for money more than once per quarter, if that helps.
As you can imagine, sniffing out these companies and writing them up for your amusement takes quite a bit of time — the Gumshoe is compensated emotionally by the thanks of his readers, and the thrill of discovery, but, frankly, he could use some more cash, too.
Stock Gumshoe carries advertising, which you might have noticed, but the other source of funds for my ongoing sleuthing efforts is the horde of happy Gumshoe readers, and they’ve got a name:
The Stock Gumshoe Irregulars (apologies to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle).
Intrigued? I thought so. Stock Gumshoe runs on contributions and on advertising, so this is one easy way to support the Gumshoe — either a one time contribution of any amount you want, or a “subscription” that will drain your Paypal account just $4.50 a month. Just use these links:
Continuing contributions of $4.50/month — you can stop at any time through your Paypal account, or by asking me to cancel it for you. Plenty of people have donated for a few months and then cancelled, and I think they can stipulate for you that I have neither begged to get them back, nor caused them any trouble in cancelling the contributions.
Or of course, if you don’t want to make an ongoing commitment you can give whatever you want.
You don’t need to have a Paypal account already — any credit card will do to get you started.
And you can easily cancel the $4.50/month plan at any time, either on your own in your Paypal account or by emailing me. You won’t hurt my feelings.
If you’d rather make a contribution by check, that’s fine, too — just make your check payable to Travis Johnson (the Gumshoe’s secret identity isn’t so secret after all) and send it to:
Travis Johnson
Stock Gumshoe
PO Box 9751
Washington, DC 20016-9751
Remember, however, that in exchange for this contribution you don’t get anything you can hold in your hand. Or a tax deduction. Or anything that regular readers of the Stock Gumshoe don’t get for free.
You don’t need to send me money to keep getting the email alerts, or to keep reading the site. I very much hope that all of you will keep reading, whether you decided to contribute financially or not.
I’m thinking of creating some more premium content that I would actually charge for and restrict access to, but for now there’s just the regular site and forum, and both are free whether you subscribe or not (and any existing paid subscribers will be grandfathered in to any premium service, of course, should they so desire).
But for now, you don’t even get a special membership card, or mailing labels, or greeting cards. If I recognize your name, I might answer your emails a little faster … but I can’t even make that bold guarantee.
That’s right — for the small, small sum of $4.50 a month you can be a member of the Irregulars and stand out as one of the generous souls who is willing to pay for what other people get for free.
It won’t seem like much money to you (I hope), just another Starbucks Venti Caramel Latte, but the mighty hordes of Stock Gumshoe readers, acting as a mighty wave of humanity, can together make a real dent in the operating expenses of the Gumshoe and help motivate him to keep doing this work.
This will help to keep the Stock Gumshoe in the power bars and coffee that fuel his late-night sleuthing activities. And help pay for the medical treatment for his poor, afflicted typing fingers. And perhaps some psychiatric treatment to force him to stop speaking of himself in the third person.
Thanks to all the readers of this site, whether you donate to the cause or not — I appreciate you reading and hope you keep coming back, this is fun work.
And keep sending me your stock spam, solved or unsolved, at ilovestockspam@gmail.com — the more the merrier (though don’t feel bad if I don’t answer yours — this has become a bit of a deluge, so I can’t quite get to them all. And if I can’t solve one, I’ll probably just be too embarrassed to tell you).
If you don’t want to, or can’t contribute financially, or if you already have, what else can you do to help the Gumshoe cause?
- Spread the word to all your investing friends.
- Feel free to post links to the Gumshoe on your own site, or email writeups to your friends if they’d be interested.
- Use the handy headline animator widget on your blog or website or MySpace page or wherever, it will always show the most recent Gumshoe article headlines. If you’d like a different version of this, I can probably help you out — just let me know.
- Check out the offerings of a few advertisers with whom I have affiliate relationships — these aren’t Gumshoe endorsed, per se, but they are legit operations that I personally use to some extent, and they have good free resources. This includes ADVFN (free membership available), which I like for foreign stock quotes and charts and some good discussion boards, and Elliott Wave International (join the free “Club EWI” by clicking here), which I’m trying to use to learn some technical analysis techniques.
- And of course, keep on sending me your teaser email spam — that’s the fuel that really keeps the Gumshoe going.
All the best, and a thousand thanks, from your friendly neighborhood Stock Gumshoe.

Hey, gumshoe
I’ve been doing what you’re doing for a while now (finding a word string that’s distinctive enough to be searchable), scoring here and there. Usually, I’m relieved that I didn’t pay anywhere for $49 to $1,995 a year for the service!
You seem to have it goin’ on, so I sent you a contribution (admittedly small, but I don’t keep much money in Pay Pal) and bookmarked both your gumshoe and home pages.
The “next Google” had eluded me, but you make it look so simple!
Sadly, I don’t know everything (although many people seem to!), so when I don’t know much about something, I ask someone who knows more about it!
What a great idea for a blog!
have a good’n,
streek

Thanks Streek — much appreciated.

Just found you and would like to add to your workload. No thanks necessary. This is from Taipan Financial News. What are the Australian microcap mining stock providing material for hybrid batteries; and the microcap company producing retrofit hybrid engines for commercial vehicles?
I knew there had to be a way to get this kind of information on line rather than paying for a slew of newsletters! THANKS
April 26th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Hi — the hybrid engine retrofit company I haven’t looked for yet, but the one that’s supplying rare earth minerals for batteries is Lynas (that hybrid connection is a more recent focus of the ads for the microcap hotsheet service that tease Lynas, but the substance hasn’t changed … other than to note that the stock has climbed even more since then).
The Lynas post is at

Hi,
Thank you for all your work and it has helped a lot. I have made a contribution just now. Please keep up the great work.

This is the BEST stock ID site I’ve ever seen. Wish I’d know about you 2 years ago. I’d have saved a lot of money.
Another good service (I think, anyway) is Zacks. It’s a little expensive, about $600 per year, but they give a lot of info.
Do any of your readers know anything about a company called Regus (RGUS)? Supposedly, they make a small, high efficiency, low emissions engine.
Just made an ongoing contribution. Thanks again.
Jim M.

Thanks folks. I definitely appreciate the contributions, they certainly help to motivate the Gumshoe …
And Jim, I haven’t run across Regus … I have been running across a lot of teasers for “swap in” hybrid engines, so maybe I’ll see something about them when I get a chance to look into those.
Cheers,
SG

Hey Gum Man:
I just discovered today your invaluable public service. I’ve been using google regularly to find the names of “mystery” stocks in teaser ads for newsletter services. Examples: SOCLF, IO, ACGY, IDIX, GVCM, SRCSF, LYSCF, SILXY, ENA, UGTH, BGE, DULMF & PLM, PNN, RRS, and SGX (ASX). It’s fun deciphering the clues. Actually, more clues are often provided than the minimum needed. The next time I can’t figure one out, I will look you up. Thanks again.

Hi Gumshoe,
We have not had much luck with Pay Pay, so, you have my email address and if you send me an address, I will send a check. Love your site. Wish I had found it years ago. Keep up the good work.

Gummy,
Have just become an irregular! Glad to know there are others like streek out there looking for answers to the newsletter “clues”. It will be good to have Gumshoe to compare data with or I might just get lazy and let you do my searching for me. PayPal works great and have used it for years. Your accepting it cinched my subscription as I never use credit cards.

Just sent you $50 via Paypal. That’s about a year or so at your 4.50/month rate.
Anyway…I really like this site. I get these teaser things daily in the mail and SOMETIMES they really do pay off. Navalier (I think it was him) sent out one on Dendreon (DNDN) earlier this year and I researched it myself, took about an hour to confirm everything, then I absolutely cleaned up on it, bought at 3 and sold about 13.
Keep up the most excellent work! (There’s your emotional reward)

Hey gumshoe,
I stumbled across you while searching for a solar stock teaser from The Green Chip Review.
See letter…

I decided to hold on for my buck for a while, but I’ll def share the wealth once these start paying off and I’ll certainly spread your message on my new blog I’m setting up.
Any way we can combine efforts here to track these companies down together? I just enjoy the hunt, so the profits are yours alone.
Matt

I’ve got a spam filter for my email that I can’t leave open ehile I await my first email from you. What is the domain name of your email server? Is it the same as the one that sent the confirmation email for registering? I really don’t want to shut you out right before I get your email.
Help please.

Gummy ~
I donated $25 - half of what you normally ask as donation - but I promise to get out another $25 in 6 months. Love the site and the the concept of “voluntary dontations”. I hope you don’t got to a paid premium service - sounds too much like “Motely Fool” and I like your anti-establishment attitude.

Thanks for all your work. I have made a contribution.
You are awesome. Keep up the good work.

Nothing from me… save for good wishes!
Alas, I’m one of those poor beleaguered copywriters who works so hard to tantalize you with teasers… while still keeping you in the dark. (You’ve “gumshoed” my promos five or six times over the last year.)
So every time you crack the code, I give. Oh my friend, how I give.
But seriously, I bear no grudge. You’re diligent and unbiased in your reviews. And, though you might not believe it, I believe what you’re doing helps keep the rest of us honest too.
Keep up the good work and best of luck for 2008!
John
P.S. Who knows… if I manage to sneak a few teasers past you, I’ll fork over some of the money I don’t lose in missed subscriptions… if you can stomach accepting it, that is. ; )

Hi Travis,
Just checked, sent you $52 on 6-29-07 which is just short of what you now suggest for a year. I love your site, wit and knowledge. I admit, I haven’t made any money from your investigative prowess, but I’m sure in looking back you’ve saved me a bundle. In support of your continued service I’m sending another check. Thanks. RJH

Thanks folks, appreciate the kind words, comments, and the contributions … and especially, I appreciate that you keep coming back to read my verbose musings. More to come!

Gumshoe - Here is a link to a great non-MLM on-line affiliate business which will generate immediate income, IF you actually do it. It starts with the download of a free e-book (PDF) “7 Great Lies of Network Marketing”. We got in a couple of weeks ago (having watched our real estate business evaporate), and our testimony is that this system does everything it claims to do, and more! Check it out @

Hot dang gumshoe! That was the longest “gimme a quarter” speech i’ve ever heard in my life! and i’m 94 years old! heheh, seriously, you deserve at least a $5 spot just for setting the new world’s record in begging. Keep up the good work. [the sleuthing, not the run-on sentences]. peace, Tired.
January 29th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Thanks, Tired! I confess to being just as bad as some of the newsletter copywriters, probably thanks to my past life as a marketing copywriter myself, though for a different kind of business (the rule used to be, at least among the folks I worked with, that you should rarely use periods because they give the reader an excuse to stop reading).
January 29th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Gumshoe - Thanks for the site. I sent you a more tangible thank you via PayPal. I think that your site is fantastic and helps to take some of the leverage out of the hands of people who are often taking advantage of the confusion and naïveté of individual investors.

Having spent probably several hundred dollars on “Newletters” in the last few months—–I really would like to get rid of the “Scams” the “lead ons that don’t really tell you anything “UNLESS” you pay anywhere from J$49.50 to “a bargain price” of ONLY a $1000.00 per year. I believe if I can access your type of site I can discover what they are referring to—–I’d be extremely happy to pay $4.40 per month to have a RELIABLE source to sift out the “harpies”. For exammple right now I have a solicitation form saying “The U.S Government’s “Secret ‘Golden Gate’ Project”====Mentions Stock #!, Stock #2, Stock #3 but never a firm name to look at—-i like to some research myself===sorry I don’t “trust” pundits as far as my personal finance(VERY Limited) is concerned—-do you see where I’m going???? get back to me please—i need to start a
Roth IRA for near retirement!!!!!

I’ve been a Gumshoe regular so it’s about time I become a ‘Stock Gumshoe Irregular’! Even if I don’t use one piece of info that you dig up, it is worth it just to read the articles. Oops, too late for that - I won’t mention the stocks by name, but I am already grateful for those I didn’t buy (and one that I did) as a result of reading your sluethings. Please don’t change your style even as you undoubtedly will get more attention, that’s what makes it all fun. I don’t subscribe to newspapers, magazines, newsletters, or even cable tv, but I am happy to suscribe to this - even though you did grovel like the rest of ‘em. (anyway, you save us far more on newsletters that we don’t subscribe to than the almost no-cost Irregular subscription rate).

I am learning as much as I can about investing and am very intrigued by your website. Thank you for the opportunity to try it free. I am told that Berkshire Hathaway bought 5% of the stock of a cancer cure stock on Friday May 9, 2008 and am interested in tracking it down. Havs anyone got info on this?? Thanx, Judy
