I just emailed the trustee of SBR, Mr. Ron Hooper of Sabine Royalty Trust, asking him this question, and here is his response (followed by my original question to him):

"Only if you borrowed money to make the investment would you be subject to unrelated business income tax (UBIT)"

Subject: short question

I just bought some SBR, Sabine Royalty Trust, for my Roth IRA--and, as it's a Roth, I will not need to pay any taxes whatsoever, right?

(income, expense, capital gain, royalty, dividend, or anything)

Thank you for your response,

Malcolm S.

so, SG, at your suggestion, I'll read-up on those nasty-sounding "2011 Corporate Tax For Trusts" (that shivers me timbers!)

My understanding is that in an IRA you'll still have Canadian taxes withheld, but cannot claim the foreign tax credit, so you lose that 15 percent or so. IRA or not is irrelevant to the larger issue, the 2011 corporate tax for Trusts.

seeking ultimate wisdom, or at least guidance to pertinent info source--I bought a couple of these royalty trusts for my Roth IRA, thinking that I'll not suffer the slings & arrows of any tax implications, right? They're a little messy, all the various states' income taxes, but can I just forget about that, as it's in my Roth??? thanks everso, to each of you smarter-than-I folks in gumshoe-land!

I have 1 of these stocks Baytex energy trust (BTE) it moved from $18.00 to $31.00 between Feb 2008 and May 2008. Along with 3 dividend payments in the $30.00 range for all those months with the shares I have. Needless to say,I'm very happy today!
