New Site Design

Regular readers will notice that the site looks a bit different today — I’m in the process of redesigning and reorganizing the site to make it more effective, more useful, and easier to read.

I’m hoping that with this new design the text will be more legible, new functionality will be gradually added (including better print/email capability), and that it will be easier to find the last week’s articles all in one place. I’ve also tried to put more emphasis on both the comments on this site from readers, and on the discussion threads that are constantly updating at the forum — I know these submissions and opinions from readers are always interesting to me, and I hope they are also useful for you.

Things are still in flux to some degree, so if you’ve got an opinion about how it looks or what has been removed or added that you like or dislike, feel free to share in a comment below. And look for things to continue to be adjusted for the next few weeks so we can open the new year with great new investing ideas, and a website that’s easier for everyone to use. Have a great weekend, and come back often!

    1. love your work.. one thing i noticed was your hyperlink did not standout; you might consider making them dark blud and underlined;

I’ve underlined them a bit, at least — hope it helps.

    2. Love the new favicon!

My primary design request would be that ads are offset by colored backgrounds, as most of yours are. There is a lot going on on this page! Would a few more borders help to cluster text?

I love your site and hope you have a good time redesigning.

Incidentally, have you read Steve Krug’s ‘Don’t Make Me Think?’ It’s a fun quick read on web usability. Not that the outstanding Gumshoe needs any tips.

      Thank you!

    3. Hi…love new designs, but, as soon as I went to yours, a message came up on my computer that it needed to be debugged. Coincidence? Hpe so.

    4. Hmmm — whether that’s a real message or one of those sleazy popup ads that look like warnings it shouldn’t have come from me. I Don’t think the new site is doing anything much different than the old in terms of security or cookies; and I don’t ever have popup ads. If others see this kind of thing here, please let me know.

i get numerous debug erros.. i’ve never been able to solve the issue; but am convinced it is due to an installation of microsoft office.. and i haven’t received the message on your site as of yet

    5. Fonts are way too small. I use Firefox to enlarge the text but because of your new design, any enlargement results in flows off-screen. The previous site, when enlarged, did not have this problem. Please spare a thought for text size.

Please keep up the good work!

Thanks, will try to figure out how to fix the font size.

I slightly increased the default size, and I think now the “text zoom” in Firefox and Safari should work again. Haven’t tested Internet Explorer yet, but that ought to work, too. Thanks for the good suggestion!

    7. will you include the performance tracker of the stocks you sleuthed since 2007? I was just following up on the micro caps amongst them, looking for possible turnarounds – now the list is off your site or what?

      StockGumshoe Reply:

Ooops, yes — have to clean up that page, but it is still there and it will be relinked soon. You can find it at http://www.stockgumshoe.com/tracking

    8. I have to admit there are too many ads. Way too many.

I am more inclined to visit by paying dough than trying to get thru the ad maze. :(

      StockGumshoe Reply:

Thanks for the comment. I think I still have about the same number of ads as before, but they may stand out more in the new layout, not sure. Or maybe I had too many before, too, but a Gumshoe’s gotta eat :)

The ads are always in flux, they’ll probably change in size and number, and move a bit as I figure out a good balance.

    9. Hey Gumshoe,

Much better on the new look. I’ve always enjoyed the content, but hated the site design.

I too use the zoom feature in Firefox and set it to whatever seems optimum for me. Anyone saying that this results in text overflow is zooming too much. Obviously there is a limit to how much you can zoom and still have everything neatly on page.

      Keep up the good work.

    10. Hi Travis,

Can you make it easier to download and print out your spreadsheets?

      Thanks,

    11. Hi, I find the new site design harder to navigate. I can’t find a place to search for the teaser I’m looking for. Could you add something like this?

There is a Google Custom Search box in the top right of the page.
