I am self employed in the timber industry ( consulting forester and log broker) and can testify there will be no recovery in lumber markets for at least 2-3 years. The amount of finished lumber both hardwood and softwood) that is currently available for consumption is astounding. Many mills - the ones that have not gone bankrupt yet- have millions of board feet spilling out of their sheds and beyond with absolutely no home for it. The ramifications of this fact have yet to be seen. If we think lumber prices are low now - wait till you see what they are at after the great lumber dump(liquidation) of spring/summer 2009 takes place. Even then the recovery will not take place due in large measure to the fact that most of the lumber producers in N. America depend on the american consumer for their markets and there is not a significant level of savings among this group to generate sustained demand.
