written by reader Heart and soul?

I would be curious to know if you have something in your archives wherein you recommended something heart and soul. I would like to have a baseline, so that I will know for sure what it means if you recommend something strongly in the future. Your critical distance and irony are extremely helpful to me, but I would be curious to see what your enthusiasm looks like.

One response to “written by reader Heart and soul?”

  1. I tend to reserve my heart and soul for non-investing pursuits, but logic would dictate that the stocks I’ve been most excited about are probably the ones that I actually buy — so for samples you could check out some of the articles I’ve written about my larger positions or just review some of my “Idea of the Month” articles where I’ve singled out investments that I like.

I last wrote in detail about my largest holdings here in March: http://stockgumshoe.com/2012/03/some-thoughts-on-my-top-ten-personal-holdings/

And you can see all the stocks in my portfolio, with links to any past comments about them, here: http://stockgumshoe.com/personal-portfolio-irregulars-only/

Even when I’m feeling pretty optimistic about a company, I’m unlikely to shout my love from the rooftops — I am not managing anyone else’s portfolio, and I believe strongly in the importance of every investor knowing what they’re investing in, so I’d much rather have my readers use commentary in this space as a starting point to understanding a company and its prospects, which might lead to some “organic enthusiasm” on your part.

When writing about teasers, I usually see it as my role to temper the over-the-top enthusiasm of the teaser writers — we can get enough of the hype and promise from the ad, so I try to add some small dose of reality to help investors build their own understanding. If I do have a strong opinion about a stock, either that it’s ridiculous penny-stock junk or a really strong and solid contender, or even just a pick that I think will go up quickly based on new attention so it might be a trading opportunity, I will occasionally let a bit of that opinion slip through in my comments, particularly if it’s a stock I’ve researched or owned before, but much of the time when I cover teaser stock I only have a basic understanding of the company — not enough to rush out and buy or urge others to do likewise.

I’m freer with my opinion in the stuff I write for the Irregulars, the Friday File (http://stockgumshoe.com/category/friday-file/) and the Idea of the Month picks (http://stockgumshoe.com/category/idea-of-the-month/), because those reach a much smaller audience and I spend more time researching them, and I’m less likely to impact the share price or mislead someone with an offhand or ill-informed opinion.
