A New Look for Stock Gumshoe

As you may have noticed, we’re shaking things up in the design and layout of the site.

Most things will continue to work very similarly to how they have in the past, but the site will work much better on mobile devices and smaller screens now, and should be generally easier on the eyes.

We’ve also simplified the basic design to make finding information a little bit easier (there’s still a ways to go on this bit) — we’ve simplified the menus at the top to make it easier to find what most people are looking for: new articles, articles that are generating a lot of attention, teaser solutions by newsletter, and active discussions of any kind.

Some of you will hate this immediately, and I’m sorry to spring the new design on you, but this is generally a pretty quiet time of year hereabouts so hopefully we’ll all have time to get accustomed to the new layout.

We’re not trying to make life more difficult, but we are trying to make the site as accessible as possible for more people.

This is step one, and we will be working on fixing bugs for a little while as well as pushing forward with some larger additions and alterations as funding and time permit (including improving subscriber reviews/rankings of newsletters and hopefully improving our search functions).

So, two things: First, thank you to the Irregulars who make it possible for us to continue investing in the site…

And second, if you notice bugs or have concerns or questions about how the new design works for you, please comment below so we can compile those questions and concerns in one place as we move forward. There are plenty of small things that aren’t working perfectly yet and where fixes are in process (like the custom avatars for commenters, for example), but there are likely some issues that we have not yet identified.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your help!

P.S. if you’re not yet seeing the new design, that’s either because we pulled it back to fix something or because your browser cache still is still feeding you the old design — you can clear your cache if you’re anxious to see the new layout, but for 99.9% of you it will update on its own before too long.

Hi Travis

Could not figure out how to reach to your portfolio and tracking performance. Can you please help?

Travis
Don’t think that this has been brought up and if it has, sorry. One of my most frustrating things it that if I want to search for posts on a particular stock to see what comments might have already been made, it would show each thread where that ticker was mentioned and then you would have to search each page of that thread to see what was said.
Right now when you do the initial search, the threads that show up are not dated (time stamped) at all and I’m not sure if they are rated to the number of times “search word” is in each thread. In old version, you could at least tell the date period. Also, it would be great if you could could just do one search within each thread (rather then each page within the comments) to find the relevant posts.
Thx for all you do.

So you couldn’t have a couple of options of searching(dropdown selection)…..one being what you have now (# of showings in parent article) and another which would be purely chronological 🙂

Was also just thinking that it would be nice to be able to search by members name that would list their comments, regardless of article, and have them appear like the “recent discussions.” Will assume that would also fall in the” indexable” issue category.

Thanks again for a great site.
Bill

Is there a page to view “past ideas of the month”? “past Friday files”?

I believe these used to exist, but now it seems they are all combined under “premium content(?).

It would be useful to be able ti view only “past ideas of the month” / only “past Friday Files” etc.

Thank you, new look a lot more manageable, as an FYI, I usually will copy and paste to Office, change fonts and look, convert to PDF and add to tablet to read while working out. This has made things much simpler since I don’t necessarily need to include the comments. Appreciate the time savings aspect

I find it hard to find Dr Kss’s latest comments all in one place as I did on the old website.

Hi Travis,
I like the clean, open look of the new format, but I’m having one of the same troubles with Likes that I had before.
I open up a page, read it, love the comments and SOMETIMES I’m able to leave Likes scattered all over like rose petals, even on my own comment if I were to be so crass as to do it.
ANOTHER TIME (like right now) I’ve opened up this page, read it, loved the comments, but am restricted to leaving ONE Like. (Lucky you, Investor101)
Cheers, Penny

Stock Gumshoe logo should be expanded upon, and Masthead should be more prominent.

You might experiment with another color to add with the green like, a dark gold.

Newsletter sign-up link in blue seems out of place.

So far all links I’ve tried, do work.

Travis, Like the new format.

If one wants to subscribe, one must click on the comments and go to the end. Suggest subscribe be right at the bottom of the article itself.

Travis —
Just wanted to add my appreciation and support. A little contrast would be helpful, especially at the top of the page, but overall I don’t have any problems with the new design.

Thanks.

I guess its the shock of the new and we’ll all adjust soon enough. But the glare from the stark white background is hard on the eyes and its not helped by the harsh text font.
Still A for effort so far.

In honour of the new avatar/gravatar I have compiled a new faux bio of our favorite Son of England and stalwart
Brexiter alanh. In early years he was quite thin, as were all who endured the privations of WW2 and the bombing of London. Apresbellum the Parliament in its excellent and eternal wisdom decided that persons should be allocated as a natural resource and so from the time of toddling children were gently directed. alans first encounter was in those early years when he was asked what he wanted to be, and his childs answer was Plumper as could have been the waif who famously asked for more ( barley gruel) when he finished his small bowl.
As is every where the case data entry in those days had
not reached its present perfection and the type got pie such that the second p in plumper got turned upside down and backward making Plumper into Plumber.
And so the die was cast.
Even though an electronic and sound genius who could have been the sixth Beattle ,,, along with a life of fast
difficult autos and the opposite in women with the attendant controlled substances, he tried being a leader in the early computer revolution. The irresistible and
inexorable invisible hand of bureaucracy finally squeezed him into the avocation of a master of drains
and hydrology. Thus the knighthood in the everlasting order of the plunger, which hall mark he is entitled to display,,, He and his heirs and assignees.
He has not received proper recognition as he has blessed this group of rebels without a pause. the Gummies.
Perhaps in a small way this will help us in future acclaim
or criticism. Yours frankly…………

One more thing (for now). Just clicked on the KSS author tab. It gives a list of his articles (cool)…but the title alone isnt very revealing. Is it possible to extract the tickers from the disclosure section so we mostly know whats in the goody bag ?

Actually, a version of this (for all author articles inc yours Travis) would go a long way towards the search feature we desparately need, while putting min strain on your computer/server system. If you picked up all the tickers mentioned in the article inc the comments via a simple search for , any dollar sign + alpha character and display them under the title, we could CtrlF from there. eg ‘ This and that story’ contains references to $XYZ. $ABC $ETC

OOOH, Im starting to like this more and more. When I do a post and transmit it to SG, your software already checks it for naughty words moderation. As part of that process, if your naughty words trap was programmed to recognise any $+an alpha, you could add it to the’ tickers contained’ list one at a time, meaning min processing overhead. There will of course be duplications which could either be ignored if previously mentioned or better, rack up a count eg $ABC (3 mentions). What would be truly fab is if it were possible to click on the $ABC and be auto directed to that/those comments without the need for manual CtrlF.

Now, Im no programmer, but I assume all those ticker references would be held in one or more tiny files, so it should be possible to search those tiny files to identify ALL mentions of $ABC on SG and list the thread Title.
Bingo, a near perfect search feature for the whole site with min processing overhead.

Not a good contrast in the print color/background color, light print makes reading difficult. Darken the font and things will be fine.

Love the new look and feel, but for me it’s actually a little harder to read because of the wider text. The answer: break it up by highlighting first sentences of paragraphs, or adding section titles. In other words, make use of the new capabilities!

The Text font needs to be darker and not so fine. Very difficult to read for any length of time. Perhaps I should take an Evelyn Wood refresher.

Travis concerning an earlier comment you asked me to inform you if it continued:

“I can’t chase down the “reader started comments”, “Most recent comments”, “Most active discussions”, etc. etc. as they run away from my mouse ha ha!”

I’ve been able to click on the links in the upper left 2 out of the last four visits, so perhaps it’s someting with my machine as I’ve not seen other comments on it.

2 more comments:

a) it would be more convenient for me if the general comment box was at the bottom of the page after the last comment rather than having to scroll all the way back up to the top.

b] the bright white background could be softened a bit for these old eyes.

Cheers on your attempt to keep improving the site and keep striving to improve the search feature.

A ‘druther’ from another brother: the ability to search one’s post in chronological order be clicking on their alias.

Thanks for all you are doing and please carrion. 🙂
