Hello Everone:

This was a tough week for those who are bullish. Took as much profit as I could but still end up losing about 20% this weekFrown. How is next week looking out? More of the same? Confused

The Dow and S&P 500 index didn't drop that much but most small caps lost a lot of ground. Is this a flight to quality that may signal some major trend developing?Confused

Appreciate any comments.Smile

Mostly a push for me this week, other than Norfolk Southern today caused me some inflammation of the hemmorhoids.  They're hurting so bad I probably didn't spell it right.  Anyway, here is what I am holding at this point.

GSB, ICO, NSC, HON, PG, NLY, HTS, CE, VWO, ILF, DO, QXM, DELL.

HTS and NLY have been good with the dividends.  Has had some nice runups in the price, however recently has lost more in price than the dividend is worth.  Maybe there is a feeling that the dividends/spreads are unsustainable.  Particularly HTS, which surprises me as I thought NLY would be the most volatile as their business model is quite confusing.  CE just can't seem to break out to the upside.  Not sure why.  Dell, I probably should have unloaded a couple of weeks ago.  Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda.

VWO I like because of the emerging market status.  ILF is just more volatile than most ETF's. Not for the faint of hear.

Am also looking at AMX.  However, it is somewhat consumer discretionary and seems to have a disproportionate revenue in Mexico.  In my mind, it appears that Mexico, as a country, is a basket case right now.  Real hard for me to pull the trigger.

QXM seems to be breaking out. I had that for quite a while and it wasn't doing anything so I got rid of it at about 2.8. I had some options in ICO that I took some profit last week.

I have a few stocks from my Money Map days like MELI, HRBN, HGG, MDAS that have delivered some profit. The rest are mostly in oil/energy and precious metals like ZN, WLL, BEXP, IVN, GRS, and GSS. I have a few puts too.

Been vacationing with no computer, sis said I needed to take a break and came home to a good week of gains.  My profits were up pretty good but there was some runs and I believe; profit taking.  Made good money though and oil, metals and biomeds were good for me. Of course I'm looking to continue for a upturn until March 2010. Back home. so I'll watch daily and continue to keep an eye on the dollar and this admin. with the belief that gold will hit 1200 before years end and oil is on a steady climb towards the 100.bbl range. This up and down so quickly action gets me a little upset at times, but as long as I'm making profit, I guess its alright. Seems some folks are buying for run ups them taking small profits to cover their losses from last year; without looking at the whole picture. I have friends who sell after a $0.10 profit , then complain when the up is 0.49 for the week and they missed the other 0.39 profit, it's nerves I guess.  Does anyone else think that the drop/give back at the end of the week was because of the unemployment numbers ??

Not doing well. As of today, knocked back down to about March’s portfolio balance. Since March, missed most of the rally and then more bad choices than good ones.

See post #2 of this thread.

Dumped CE this morning at the open because of the earnings report.  Nice jump.  Took my profits and ran.  Needed to because ILF is really struggling, losing another 2.5% today.  Also got rid of HTS.  Why it isn't doing better, I don't know.  Slow decline in price, but I expect it will keep its dividend.  Apparently not everyone agrees.  I suspect it's because the market is expecting the spreads of its business to shrink.  Took a small profit plus dividend.  Unfortunately overweighted on ILF compared to them.  So was not a pretty day for my portfolio.

I have just bailed out of the market as everything I own has been tanking. Since I have an unerring eye for selling at the exact bottom (in this case 7:45am PST, Oct 28, 2009) the way is now clear for the market to come roaring back.

I am so sorry that you had to bail out. This time you did not bail out at the bottom though. By bailing out at 7:45 am PST, you probably saved yourself a few percentage points as the market continued to trend down until the bell so that wasn't the bottom.

Take care!

Not bad, huh Darrell? I ALWAYS sell at the bottom. This time within 1 trading day of it, anyway–good enough. This is half the reason why I should not be playing this game.

I did manage to get back in today for about half the rally, so while I missed a fair chunk of gain, it could have been worse. I bought back into a couple at a price lower than where I sold.

You might be better off than you think. You sold at the beginning of the day yesterday. The market trended down all day. You'd saved yourself a couple of points. Today you went in for half the rally. You should figured out how you would have been had you stayed in yesterday. Anyway, you sound a lot better today than yesterdaySmile

Welcome back!Wink

Will, thanks for the welcome and I may do that arithmetic, but even so I missed big gains (~17%) in two of my just-sold stocks, ASIA and SVM; I also didn’t buy all the way back in 2/3 vs 3/4 before). The losses over the previous 3 days are very large, though…it’ll take some time to make them back. Funny how it’s so much easier and faster to lose than to gain—claw your way slowly up, then give up all the gain (or more!) in what seems like an instant.

Yesterday's gains will be gone by the end of the day and I'll be down for October.  CryCryCry

TGFIO!  Surprised    I think you should buy/sell……Confused

Nope, this is not a ticker for some stock. It stands for “Thank God Friday is Over”Wink

Gave back every penny I made yesterday but I was able to clean up my portfolio. Got rid of some OTM options and bought in some ATM options. The few puts that I bought brought in some money too.

I feel better now than I did yesterday, especially since Black October's 12th Aniversary is finally behind us.

I need to change the title of this thread to “This is the end of two tough weeks”

Have a great weekend, everyone! God Bless you all!

I’ll chime in. Last week I sold nothing, therefore lost nothing. Some of my holdings went down but I don’t need that money right now so I’ll be King Log and wait around til they come back.

There’s about 20% dry powder I may spend this week {I’m keeping a sharp eye on General Growth Properties and don’t be misled by the PK designation}.

On Saturday, my college football team came back at the last minute to win a game they should have won easily. On Sunday my pro football team held off the other guys at the last minute to win a game they should have lost.

Tomorrow, I fly to Charlotte, NC to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, then fly back home the next day.

All in all, a very nice two weeks even if my account is worth less than it was.
