Stock Gumshoe Reviews is a place for investors to help other investors.

Many of us rely on investment newsletters to provide a financial education, a new perspective, a portfolio to mimic, or just a few stock ideas.

But which one is the best for you? If you’ve subscribed to any of these services in the past, which ones did you like the most? Did you think the stock picks were great, but the customer service awful? Did the newsletter recommend too many trades for you, or too few … or was it just right? Did the writers make you smile and feel like an old friend, and help you learn something, or did they just make you mad?

Investment newsletters run the gamut, some are huge and boast a hundred thousand happy subscribers, others have just a few readers. And just as with mutual funds, the top performer from this year is often the bottom of the barrel next year. We want to know about them all.

What did you like about any investment newsletters you’ve subscribed to? What did you dislike? Let us know by submitting your review. Or if you’re considering subscribing to an investment newsletter right now, take a look and see if any other subscribers have shared their views.

We won’t be strictly limiting ourselves to traditional stock picking newsletters, either, though that will probably make up the lion’s share of the site — feel free to review trading software or systems, or free newsletters or services if you like. I’ve added many well-known newsletters to the site and they’re ready for review now, but there are thousands more — if you can help us by reviewing a title that’s not yet on the site, we’ll love you for it. Just click the “submit a review” link at the top of the page and you can review whatever you please, I’ll move your review to the right place once you’ve submitted it (just make sure to include the title of the newsletter in your review so I can identify it).

And if you do decide to subscribe to a newsletter for the first time, don’t forget to come back in a few months and let us know what you think!

Here’s my promise:

I won’t revise, edit, or otherwise tamper with any reviews (unless they’re profanity-laced or personally offensive, or the reviewer asks for an editing fix, or they’re filed in the wrong place — in which case I’ll move them to where they belong). All reviews are subject to moderation to prevent automated “spam” submissions or flagrant abuse, but they’re not edited for content, nor are the opinions checked for accuracy or fairness — if you think someone has the wrong take on a newsletter, you can submit a review that tells us why they’re wrong. Please focus on your experience and opinion, though you may certainly disagree with previous reviewers — note that negative comments about other reviews that aren’t themselves stating opinions about the newsletter in question run the risk of being deleted, we have no interest in providing a forum for personal attacks that don’t otherwise add to our understanding.

I won’t review any newsletters myself — because of my other work on StockGumshoe.com I don’t subscribe to stock picking newsletters, and even if I have experience with one I don’t want to sway any reviews. This is the place for your opinion, not mine.

Rankings will be averages that are as fair as I can make them — the rankings on this site are based on an algorithm that uses all the star ratings that reviewers apply to each title. I won’t mess with the algorithm or otherwise try to influence the rankings.

There will probably be advertising on this site, but advertisers will not be able to influence their rankings.

Publishers are welcome to direct their subscribers here to share their opinions, but are discouraged from submitting reviews of their own products.

And finally, I’ll listen to what you think — if you have ideas for how to improve this site, fix mistakes, or otherwise help you help each other, just let me know.
