I prescribed to this newsletter approximately 5 years ago and have considered dropping it for the last three. The only reason I am still a subscriber is because I have a substantial portion of my portfolio invested in the American Fund Family and have hoped to gain important insight. I did recently write the editor regarding my concerns and wishes for his newsletter, but not surprisingly, received no answer. I subscribe to some of the other Morningstar newsletters (now only the Dividend Investor & Stock Investor) and by far think this has the least value. I believe the information reported in this newsletter can be seen on the website that is available to me through the Premium Morningstar subscription. There is one section that lists the favorite and the least favorite American Funds (but contains little insightful information). There is also detailed reporting of one or two funds which I really view more as a summary of the same data found on the general M*star website. At the end is an editorial page that I frequently find difficult to understand. Sometimes there is a discussion of a topic that may define a concept; but there is really no clearcut advise. When I finish the newsletter I always have unanswered questions. I never have new insight that will help me determine if I need to take any action on my personal portfolio.
I am contemplating discontinuing the American Funds portfolio.
PLEASE KNOW however, the M*star website is excellent, excellent, excellent- just not this phase of the service.
