Gumshoe catchup — What’s been hot this week?

by Travis Johnson, Stock Gumshoe | May 15, 2008 3:36 pm

A few of my dear readers have been steadfastly reading every missive from the Gumshoe’s tired keyboard for well over a year now, but there are new folks every day here … and lots of you who only catch an occasional article, so I thought I’d try to catch everyone up on what has been coming in hot and heavy in the ‘ol mailbox lately.

This is just what I’m seeing in the last week or two — these aren’t the long-term most popular posts, for that you can always hit up the Greatest Hits page, which is linked from the top.

So what am I seeing a lot of these days?

Our friend Dan Denning[1] has apparently caught the attention of his Agora[2] and Stansberry colleagues with his Australian advisory service, because he’s gotten access to their mailing lists and is going crazy trying to see if he can pick up some American subscribers. The email teaser was all about Aussie resource companies, going out under the name, “Pilbara Profit Secret” — there are a bunch of companies teased in that ad, so I spread it out a bit:

Here’s the first Pilbara writeup[3] — it’s all about an iron ore[4] crusher that also does pipeline work.

And here’s the second on Pilbara[5] — it’s about three companies, an iron ore miner, a mining services firm, and a natural gas[6] giant. Denning also sent along a note/rebuttal after reading my comments, so I appended that to the writeup in case you’re interested.

The other one that’s getting some crazy play is Andrew Mickey[7]’s looooong teaser of companies that are somehow related to Russia[8] — and ways to play a fear of Putin. This was also a hefty one, so it’s broken out into three articles:

Profit from Putin, part 1 — LNG[9]

nickel[10]-and-fertilizer[11].html" target="_blank">Profit from Putin, part 2 — Nickel

and Profit from Putin, part 3 — agriculture[12]

I’m also seeing a big resurgence in Motley Fool[13] mailings — the two that are coming across my screen most frequently are the Tier Two Cities teaser from Bill Mann[14]’s folks at Global Gains, and the New American Super Brand, which was one of the very first Gumshoe writeups back in March of 2007, and is still going strong (though the Brand itself is in a bit of a tough spot at the moment, scraping around right about at its 52-week low). Here are the links:

New American Super Brand[15] (this is the “updated” article, still quite old)

and

Tier Two Monsters — The Indian Bank[16], and the Chinese Hotelier[17].

The big writeup of the Motley Fool’s four favorite alternative energy[18] plays is still apparently making the rounds, too — if you missed that the first time, it’s available here[19].

Also in that energy space, just to close this out with a final note, I’m also seeing lots of questions about the Alternative Energy Speculator[20]’s natural gas trucking teaser, the “Clean Air Cash-outs[21].”

So that’s what I’m seeing a lot of these days — and what my readers have been asking the most about. Hopefully some of those are new to you, too … or at least worth of revisiting.

And if not, stay tuned — I can confidently tease you with the fact that there will be more brilliant, insightful and witty Gumshoe goodness coming your way soon.

For full disclosure, some of my holdings in the companies mentioned above may have changed since I first wrote about them. Of the companies mentioned in these writeups I now own shares of Westport Innovations, and I remain a shareholder of HDFC Bank. I also have overlooked some of my Russia fears and picked up shares in Vostok Nafta when they seemed to be trading at a small discount to net assets (Vostok Nafta was not directly teased by anyone — it is a Lundin-affiliated Sweden[22]-based Russian investment fund that’s a major investor in Black Earth Farming[23], which was one of the Russian investments discussed, and I did mention the fund in that writeup). It’s a strange bird of an investment, but whether or not it appeals to you the annual reports are worth reading[24] for an interesting perspective on investing in Russia.

I’m just glad I could open the comments for a change. Don’t understand why I can and then I can’t.

  2. brenda says:

Me too, Byron – have heard similar cmplaints, am trying to figure it out. Thanks!

  3. Michael says:

    Hi Gumshoe,
there are two Aussie plays worth to be considered,
both of them have very promising assets in the field of rare earths/uranium/phosphoric acid – why bother about Pilbara, anyway?
Have a look at Arafura Resources, and Lynas (don’t you own this one already?)
    Have a relaxed weekend!
    All the best
    Michael

  4. SageNot says:

Thanks for a very valuable recap Gumshoe, I’m relatively new here, & I don’t intentionally bring up companies that you’ve already “outed!” You my friend, you’re a FIND! Nothing rubs me the wrong way worse than market letter BS, which us suckers spend entirely too much $$ on. Congrats in spades!

Enjoy your w/e, you deserve it.

  5. A says:

The clean energy cash out is for WPT.To which has gone up almost 50% in the past month.

  6. brenda says:

    Thanks for the comments, folks.

Michael, yes I still own some shares of Lynas. Have never looked at Arafura.

A, you’re correct on the clean-air cash-outs, my full article on that is linked above and that is Westport Innovations, which I noted above that I also own shares of. US pink sheet symbol is WPIVF, they had a big run earlier this week on a new engine deal and, perhaps, on more pushing from the newsletter folks. I obviously like the company but would not be surprised to see shares get back down to $3 or so. CLNE, which they own part of and is in the nat gas fueling station business (Westport develops and makes the actual engines), had a nice run, too, but dipped a bit on earnings today. Both, incidentally, are T. Boone Pickens holdings — he has been one of the louder proponents of natural gas as a transportation fuel.

    What about this teaser…

  8. Ralph says:

Hi Gumshoe, in “Untapped Wealth” Tim Fields writes about “Aussie Soles (ause) which is supposed to have just came on the stock market here in USA. It should be or is the #2 shoe maker behind Crocs in Aussie land. Claiming big growth soon. What are your or anyones thoughts about the company as an investment/ Ralph B.

  9. Any thoughts on this “Chaffee Royalty” deal?

  10. EYOUNG says:

Laurie,,, I sent a copy of that to Travis, Was TOTALLY Lost on it, then did some investigation,,, Don’t know how it’s going to work, according to the newsletter, but the company has to be RIO, ( COMPANHIA VALE ADS(NYSE: RIO) ) closed on 5/16/08 at $43.91, after hours up $.09 to $44.00. Maybe Gumshoe can come up with more!,,,
I have had a lot of letters on this, as well.

  11. TMiller says:

One royalty trust that has been workin good for me the last couple months is ERF. Stock keeps going up plus a monthly dividen of around .40 cents or 10%+ a year. I ran across it while trying to figure out what investment one of the dudes from daily wealth or angora was teasing me wiff. SJT works also ( though I believe they are more of a bank play) just an observation but seems when energy is down banks are up.

Mobil oil and KOG been doing well also as a play on the balken tease. Course iffin the price of oil drops so will the above stocks.

  12. sniper says:

Travis. A question for you if I may. Why does Billiton have two different stock symbols. BHP & BBL. BHP trades approx. $10. higher per share than BBL. What is the advantage of buying one over the other. Sorry that was two questions. Again, thanks for your great sleuthing and hope you have a great weekend.

  13. Mike McDonald says:

Since I stumbled on “Gumshoe” I haven’t purchased any stock without research on Gumshoe – also, I was spending a lot of time reading the teasers – got so I could tell a teaser by the layout and would delete before reading – but know I just follow “Gumshoe” and save all kinds of time and money! Love it……..
