The Congress has concluded, with a couple dozen sessions over two days exposing your friendly neighborhood Gumshoe to probably 50+ interesting investment ideas.
I’ve shared notes on almost all of those sessions over the past two days, and I’ve now got lots of ideas bouncing around my head that I’m setting aside for deeper analysis once I’ve shaken off the fog of a long weekend in Las Vegas. And, of course, we’ll also be getting back to our regular work of teaser-deciphering for your edutainment in the days to come.
Yesterday I mentioned that the ideas that were most instantly appealing from day one were Rosetta Stone and Atlas Financial, and today I’m having a bit more trouble narrowing them down … Whitney Tilson’s reiteration of his argument for AIG shares was pretty compelling, not least because it came up in some other presentations as well, and his pick of Spark Networks and the suggestions of other presenters to look at Whistler Blackcomb, Nathan’s Famous, Live Nation, WPX Energy, Dole Food and First American Financial all made me prick up my ears.
Here are the notes I’ve shared today — as with yesterday, these are notes that I posted live during the day, they are rough in some places and may include errors. You’ll need to be logged in as an Irregular to read these (login is at the top right of this page):
Guy Gottfried’s Undervalued Energy Pick — WPX Energy
Mark Boyar’s Three Undervalued Stocks — WU, WW and DOLE
Zeke Ashton’s Safer Real Estate Play, and thoughts on investor mistakes– First American Financial/a>
Four Ideas from COMPOUND — TARP Warrants, Nathan’s Hot Dogs and Live Nation
David Hurwitz: Growth Hopes versus Earnings and Real Assets
Vitaly Katesenelsen’s Downhill Dividend — Whistler Blackcomb
Mittleman Brothers: Invest like Private Equity — Revlon and Carmike Cinemas
The ADP of Israel from Ori Eyal — Hilan Tech
Harris Kupperman, Mongolia and Making Your Own Opportunity When All Else Fails
Thanks Travis, will review these and look forward to your filtered take. Dividend paying value plays make up the bulk of ny portfolio.
This isn’t exactly value but would appreciate a few profiles for irregulars on small (250mm and below) firms not in the natural resources and biotech industries for those of us who are willing to take a risky nibble in return for the prospect of large cap appreciation.
Travis,
I looked up the stock WPX and found it to be a 54 cent Canadian stock dealing in minerals and potash. What’s my problem.

WPX Energy is at ticker WPX in New York, the WPX ticker in Toronto is Western Potash — sorry, in my original notes I didn’t make that distinction.
I bought LOV -Sparks- on May 8 after reading the Travis’ post. hope the lov continues: its up 14% in one week.
