written by reader How to Prioritize Tip Sections?

By anthonytai, December 5, 2013

Hi Travis,

Over the last 2 plus years, I have read your articles on a daily basis and and have really enjoyed every piece of your writing. Before following your newsletter, I was burnt badly several times picking my own stocks without additional research. Since I have subscribed to your letter, I feel much better informed and understand the associated risks with certain stocks.

However, if you could only choose one or two sections, which section of your tips would you recommend using to invest money in? That is, would you use the ”Idea of the Month”, ”Friday File”, ”Travis’ Personal Portfolio”, or the daily tips you decode for your readers? I understand everybody is responsible for their own investment decisions, but, I have a limited budget and can only act on some of your tips.

Thanks!
Anthony

Hi Anthony,

Good questions, thanks. I hope that people think of me as someone who can help them generate investing ideas and think about how to evaluate and consider the prospects of a company. Here’s how I think about it:

The “Idea of the Month” stocks are the ones I’m most comfortable suggesting to other investors — Ideas i’ve researched and understand pretty well and like at the time that I cover them (often that opinion changes over the years, of course, I review each stock on our Irregulars spreadsheet at least once a year and often comment on them more often). Sometimes these are stocks I own, sometimes I don’t own them and never end up buying them.

The stocks I own and trade personally are stocks that I am comfortable buying for myself, within the constraints of my personal portfolio needs (I’m 43, I have kids, I’m probably overly patient with stocks and am overweight in some sectors but try to be diversified, etc.) Most of my readers are substantially older than I am and in or near retirement, so the risk tolerance and patience required for some stocks I own may be out of line with what folks really want for themselves for a multitude of reasons … but I do share my trades and my thoughts on these because they interest some folks, and because I hope it helps to share the way I think.

In the Friday File it’s a total hodgepodge — I often use the Friday File to update folks on stocks I’ve covered as “Idea of the Month” picks or that I own personally, but sometimes I also just cover teaser stocks — it depends a lot on what’s happening at the end of that particular week and whether I’ve got a fun teaser to uncover.
