The Long Case for Receptos

OK, admit it….how many of you have seen the campy films of Baltimore director John Waters? The ones starring the transvestite Divine? Mondo Trasho? Multiple Maniacs? Pink Flamingos? How about his 1988 version of Hairspray?

[“Hon, ain’t this supposed to be a column about investing in biotech? Who’s this Waters guy?”

“It’s about biotech Marge….just read on. Dr. KSS has some nutty wire up his backside, but he’ll come around to biotech. He’s just doin’ his wacky edu-tainment thing. Hey, don’t steal all the blanket.”]

He signed it and circled his favorite smell (#9).

“John,” I said, “Every single time I see you—I’ve seen a ton of your interviews—you are not only happy, but you are really almost maddeningly gleeful. Irrepressibly cheery. What’s the secret to that?”

“That’s easy!,” he said. He crossed his legs and then linked his fingers over a knee. “Be obsessed. I mean, be obsessed!” (emphasis his). And that, for me, is a right way to think about life. If you love the people around you, are generous with your empathy, and are obsessed, I think you have the bases covered.

He gave a furtive shrug as he said “obsessed.”He said he’d often been a glum person as a teenager, and that when the blues struck him, he learned to find some new topic, freaky person, idea, habit, song, bit of history or storyline to become totally hung ...
