Travis:
This is good stuff and the reason why Gumshoe is the best value in financial news/commenting. I spend a lot of money on Financial Newsletters, Navellier, Stansberry, Dent, Gardner, etc. While their writings are interesting and informative, their investing advice boarders on overwhelming. Who can afford to follow their thousands of recommendations. Your irregulars Friday File offers common sense observations and insights into your personal investing style which is much closer to mine. What I get for my $4.50 per month is orders of magnitudes more valuable to me than what I get from the “Big Names”. Makes me wonder why I am subscribing to those. Keep on doing what you are doing Travis.

Fantastic to hear Joe, thanks — that makes my day.
I have no guess how low the market may fall, but when it seems to have bottomed would be most interested in AAPL and TSLA. I think you’re spot on about AAPL’s likely massive sales in China, and though the country is in for very some rough economic adjustments, perhaps the social unrest their gov’t is afraid of will occur and eventually result in more personal and economic freedom (and therefore long-term stability). Given the chance, I hope China’s people will do the opposite of what Russia’s people did when they had an opportunity to expand freedom in their country.
I was interested to read last week that, even as Larry Summers, Christine Lagarde, the World Bank, et. al. were urging the Fed not to raise interest rates for fear of sparking an emerging markets panic, several emerging markets finance ministers (Indonesia’s, for one) were urging the contrary tack, saying that taking the hit now was preferable to remain with the uncertain prospect of a future rate rise hanging over their heads. I will wait to see what happens before plunging into more emerging markets investments (and let’s not forget that Brazil and China are not the same as Egypt or Indonesia or Colombia), but it looks as if there could be a big buying opportunity regardless of what the Fed does this month.
Thank you for the update…I especially enjoy the documentation of your thought processes!
Hi Travis,
Since you were talking about DIS I have a question. They have paid a dividend every year in Dec. all of a sudden they paid one in the third quarter. Why would they change?
This year they’ve switched to a semiannual dividend — paying half in June, half in December. Though they haven’t specifically announced that the December dividend will be the same as the June one, I think that’s the expectation among investors given Disney’s recent (five years) trend of dividend increases. I don’t know if they said why they changed the payout schedule, but my guess would be that it’s just because investors tend to prefer dividends to be spread out through the year over an annual dividend payment.
Thanks for the reminder about SBUX at $5. I’ve recently started writing down notes on certain missed opportunities, including that one, in order to learn going forward. I also appreciate hearing about all the “hot picks” from a source that promotes self-discipline and due diligence. These are the priceless lessons to be gained through investing.
