$FYI – One of the things I look forward to for the Holidays is hoping it cold enough to make a batch of my Great Grandfathers Tom & Jerry hot toddies. There are a few variations of Tom and Jerrys adding additional spices, allspice, clove, or cinaminon. I’ve even added Agastora bitters which I think is interesting. There is another that uses powdered milk. I found the variations by googling ‘hot toddy tom and jerry’. This is about half of what my Great Grandfather would make.
3 eggs
1/4 cup Honey
1/2 box Powdered sugar
Separate eggs, beat egg whites stiff
Mix egg yolks, and Honey, then add sugar slowly till thick. Note – A teaspoonful of cream of tartar, or about as much carbonate of soda as you can get on a dime, will prevent the sugar from settling to the bottom of the mixture.
Fold in stiff egg whites, do not stir, Batter is now ready.
To make the drink
In a hot mug place slice/wedge of Lemon, Rum, Brandy, or both, about a jigger or to taste. Fill mug 1/4 to 1/3 with batter. Add hot water as in boiling to . I then mix from bottom to catch any batter that has not frothed. Last but not the least sprinkle Nutmeg, preferably grate fresh Nutmeg(nut) on top.
