A New Look for Stock Gumshoe

By Travis Johnson, Stock Gumshoe, June 23, 2016

As you may have noticed, we’re shaking things up in the design and layout of the site.

Most things will continue to work very similarly to how they have in the past, but the site will work much better on mobile devices and smaller screens now, and should be generally easier on the eyes.

We’ve also simplified the basic design to make finding information a little bit easier (there’s still a ways to go on this bit) — we’ve simplified the menus at the top to make it easier to find what most people are looking for: new articles, articles that are generating a lot of attention, teaser solutions by newsletter, and active discussions of any kind.

Some of you will hate this immediately, and I’m sorry to spring the new design on you, but this is generally a pretty quiet time of year hereabouts so hopefully we’ll all have time to get accustomed to the new layout.

We’re not trying to make life more difficult, but we are trying to make the site as accessible as possible for more people.

This is step one, and we will be working on fixing bugs for a little while as well as pushing forward with some larger additions and alterations as funding and time permit (including improving subscriber reviews/rankings of newsletters and hopefully improving our search functions).

So, two things: First, thank you to the Irregulars who make it possible for us to continue investing in the site…

And second, if you notice bugs or have concerns or questions about how the new design works for you, please comment below so we can compile those questions and concerns in one place as we move forward. There are plenty of small things that aren’t working perfectly yet and where fixes are in process (like the custom avatars for commenters, for example), but there are likely some issues that we have not yet identified.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your help!

P.S. if you’re not yet seeing the new design, that’s either because we pulled it back to fix something or because your browser cache still is still feeding you the old design — you can clear your cache if you’re anxious to see the new layout, but for 99.9% of you it will update on its own before too long.

Hi, Being a webmaster myself, I notice things & share them with sites if they need be. Firstly, your new site design is great, easy to read, etc. Secondly, at the bottom of your pages, you have written: “Please see below for complete disclosure, disclaimer and policy information.” and it’s not “below” it’s to the right, so maybe ‘Please see links for….’ would work more efficiently. Keep up the good work!

1] The London Bookies got it wrong. The odds I saw were 10 to 1 for not leaving. Now the London bookies are like Market Makers who want to make money on the bid/ask spread and not direction. The odds being offered is what gives for them an even bet depending how the betting is going on both sides. 2] For American companies fear as reflected by implied volatility on their options was over done. 3] Never ever sell the American people short. Somewhere somebody will come up with a solution. It might take a couple of months to get… Read More ยป

When showing headers with the titles of articles and discussions, please include the date they were initiated. It would laos be great if you could have the date of the last post, and whether the thread is open or not.

Under the author tab with its listing past thread titles; is it really necessary to have the disclaimer time an time again. Surely once at the top of the screen and within the thread is sufficient.

In the same way as you link to the author details, could you allow a link to the commenters profile so that we know a bit about them?

Hi Travis,
My initial impression (which would be predictably be ‘ugh’ – by virtue of human inertia) is that there is waayy to much white–i.e. empty background.
I imagine that’s a consequence of mobilization, er, you called it smaller devices.
I have had occasion to read Gumshoe Wisdom on an Ipad (8″) but that was fine then and is still fine now albeit less colorful.

The site is not allowing me to read Brexit, though I have been an irregular for several years. Could you please see why that is?

I am finding this new format very cumbersome and not very user friendly. Perhaps its just me. The latest is that the Cntl F search function is not working. As I commented earlier, losing the 10 most recent comments from the upper right makes it much more difficult to ascertain when there have been recent comments to the threads that I am most interested in (I do not subscribe to all these threads as there is lots on miscellaneous stuff being posted) so I, and I assume, others found the 10 most recent comments an effective tool. All you show… Read More ยป

Hi Kenny, discussions, most recent comments, yields previous 50.
Ctrl+f works fine on this end.
If not able to move new comments box, perhaps a link to the box?

Ben/Travis – the issue of Cntl F not working was my error. In my attempt to search for comments posted on June 25, I did a search on June 25…. with this new format it should have been ‘Jun 25’ …so my bad on that one. But I still don’t see “most recent comments” as you mentioned Ben. All I see is “recent articles” and within that is a tally of the number of total comments. This is of no value.

Travis, I have enjoyed your recent thoughtful comments on BREXIT – which have appeared on the KSS blog. As I reported to Lynn, some time ago, my “Like” (thumbs up) function is no longer working. This problem started shortly before the switch to the new format and may or not be related. I assume it will be fixed in time. No need to reply as you must be a busy guy.

I have also cushioned the Brexit impact with a good dose of gold and precious metals , including ETFs and miners, as well as many of your recent tips on individual miners. Inaddution, with some Reits thrown in for good measure. Thanks for all the incisive analyses and timely tip

Hi Travis. I do appreciate your next iteration of the site. Some feedback on search. I was just doing a search to see if a particular stock had been mentioned or discussed previously (FLXN). When I search, a number of articles are returned in the search result. However, when I look in the article, the search term (FLXN) does not seem to appear (I am simply doing CTRL-F to find the term in the article). I assumed, therefore, that the term may have been mentioned in a comment somewhere(?) However, it was not feasible to search through all 1000+ comments… Read More ยป

I agree the search is not good (see my suggestions above) But you’ll do far better searching for $FLXN or (say) $ANY. The $ sign sets it apart from ANYthing or mANY etc

Travis,

New site has a great uncluttered look which is easy on the eyes. Bugs will come and bugs will go as we explore.

Travis –

I like the new look very much, and agree that bugs come and bugs go. It’s part of any upgrade. I know that from experience. I think you have done a terrific job in the look and feel of the site, and I especially like the serif typeface. I’m a retired senior citizen (older than dirt), and it takes a while for me to search through all the nuances, however I really like what you’ve done.

This is a shining example of what a great site should accomplish – trustworthy
information!

Travis.
Thanks for putting the time back on each comment, now I can try to find where I left off last time,
However, I have a hard time getting to the comments on the “active” thread so I can get back in and monitor the comments.
I used to just go to the thread and the comments would be there, Now they are not, How do you get to them?
