A New Look for Stock Gumshoe

by Travis Johnson, Stock Gumshoe | June 23, 2016 12:06 pm

As you may have noticed, we’re shaking things up in the design and layout of the site.

Most things will continue to work very similarly to how they have in the past, but the site will work much better on mobile devices and smaller screens now, and should be generally easier on the eyes.

We’ve also simplified the basic design to make finding information a little bit easier (there’s still a ways to go on this bit) — we’ve simplified the menus at the top to make it easier to find what most people are looking for: new articles, articles that are generating a lot of attention, teaser solutions by newsletter, and active discussions of any kind.

Some of you will hate this immediately, and I’m sorry to spring the new design on you, but this is generally a pretty quiet time of year hereabouts so hopefully we’ll all have time to get accustomed to the new layout.

We’re not trying to make life more difficult, but we are trying to make the site as accessible as possible for more people.

This is step one, and we will be working on fixing bugs for a little while as well as pushing forward with some larger additions and alterations as funding and time permit (including improving subscriber reviews/rankings of newsletters and hopefully improving our search functions).

So, two things: First, thank you to the Irregulars who make it possible for us to continue investing in the site…

And second, if you notice bugs or have concerns or questions about how the new design works for you, please comment below so we can compile those questions and concerns in one place as we move forward. There are plenty of small things that aren’t working perfectly yet and where fixes are in process (like the custom avatars for commenters, for example), but there are likely some issues that we have not yet identified.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your help!

P.S. if you’re not yet seeing the new design, that’s either because we pulled it back to fix something or because your browser cache still is still feeding you the old design — you can clear your cache if you’re anxious to see the new layout, but for 99.9% of you it will update on its own before too long.

    Hi Travis
Still having problems with some of the “Most Recent Comments” links.
    Try clicking on this one:
bizbanx on Conflict Diamonds / Jul 13, 11:33am
    It’s a dead link.
I think any comment that is written in an “older comments” section, can’t be linked to.

I like the new format but offer one slight suggestion. The brief ‘header’ blurbs that come up in response to a search do not include the date of the article. It would avoid useless search time for clearly out-of=date articles and help greatly if they did.

How do I find Clubhouse Volume 5 ?

  4. We’ve just gone live with the latest batch of edits/updates to fix and improve some minor things — much of the stuff folks have asked about in this thread has now been addressed (more readable typeface, dates added to search results, improved “recent comments” listings and lots of other little tweaks).

The next wave of changes we’re looking at are a substantial upgrade to the comment system that will, I hope, allow for better comment searching and some other capabilities (and faster page loads), and the return of our “star ratings” system for newsletters that lets readers like you review and assign a grade to all of the newsletters you’ve tried (we still have thousands of reviews of newsletters that readers have submitted, but haven’t been able to rank or visually show those ratings — and that part of the software has been broken for a while, so many of the reviews we do have are getting pretty long in the tooth). Hopefully some of those improvements will be coming over the next few weeks, the comments system is up for attention next but we tend to find little surprises when dealing with migrating a decade’s worth of content to new systems… fingers crossed.

And after addressing those two bigger things, we’ll pretty much be out of money to pay developers… so probably no more big changes for a while, I know several of you will celebrate that! 🙂

Thanks for the continued suggestions and responses, and for being fantastic readers — I know change is hard and irritating, but I hope we’re consistently improving things as we go.

Hi Travis, progress is painful at times but a necessary evil.
Currently when one references a link prior to 50 posts, the page number does NOT exist, and fails to return to referenced post, i.e.: #QoD 07252016 http://WWW.STOCKGUMSHOE.COM/2016/07/THE-STATE-OF-THINGS-RUCTION-AT-REGULUS/#COMMENT-4882628 Best-Ben

I noticed when looking up for example “Reader Started Discussions”, you can only see one page of discussions. I can’t find a link to more pages of discussions. Is this going to be addressed? Thanks.

I like the new look overall, and looking forward to some of the upcoming improvements. I can see why some people think it’s too much white… maybe just allowing a few options to change appearance would help.
I wanted to report the login process is not working in Firefox 47 on Mac 10.11.5. It works fine in Safari and in Firefox on my Windows PC at work. Thanks for all your hard work!

Travis, sorry but do not like the new format at all. Way to confusing in all aspects,
Don’t enjoy coming to the site anymore because of this!
