While I have you on the line (ahem) have you and/or Frank read Farley Mowat’s writings? Your interest in native culture and well-being leads me to believe you would find his books a very good read. One of his books was made into the movie “Never Cry Wolf”. He campaigned hard for the Inuit and was a champion of native cultures in the Far North. I am presently reading “Otherwise” which tells you a great deal about the man.

Thank you for calling this to my attention as I was aware of his writing but never looked closely at him. I think he was very much a product of his time, as am I, and we would have found many areas of agreement.
In my view the wolf is no more noble than man and is neither kind nor cruel They just are part of nature which also has that character, Nature does not care a bit about us or what we think and will kill us without emotion if we are not mindful. Men at their best are much better than wolves but at our worst we are far more savage and cruel.
Unfortunately we must always contend with the worst and have too few of the best. IMO
Volcanic gases affecting earth;

There are many volcanoes underwater and the gases are dissolved to acidify the water. As noted in NASA piece a lot of sulphur gases are injected into upper atmosphere, where they are a potent cooling gas through reflecting sunlight.
I maintain that when we cleaned up the industry sulphur pollution that did a lot in causing global warming. CO2 is a negligible greenhouse gas. IMO
Creatine,,, mainly in the monohydrate form is much used in the athletic community for muscle building and preservation.
Recently supplement makers are pushing it for the more aged group as a mental preservation as well as muscle retention.

I can find no credible studies that show any benefit in brain state, cognitive ability or Altzheimers onset.
I do think that the feeling of well being that one gets from physical activity is good for the human condition and organism.
In my view getting your pulse and breathing rate up,,, even if only for five minutes, daily helps you live longer.

Light or any radiated energy has both wave and quantum properties IMO. What we see is only what we perceive/sense. An Irish song has a line,, Pigs can’t sing and pigs can’t fly, but pigs can see the wind go by,,, which i take to mean, even pigs can see which way the wind is blowing. Perhaps this belongs on the religion page , but I believe that all creation came from a vast pool of intelligent energy that we call God. One unit possessing all power or force/energy, almighty,,, and also with all attributes of a person.
All things are composed of forces interacting such as electrons and protons with various, seeming particles, that make up matter. Things that have mass and can be observed and measured by our sense organs and brain.
I am convinced that the common view of an electron orbiting a nucleus, like a planet orbiting the sun, is wrong or incomplete. When you seek an electron it is found anywhere you look. Perhaps the crystal sphere theory to explain our solar system has some validity on an atomic level in quantum physics.
Einstein was neither an atheist or an agnostic and once said ” God does not play dice with the universe”. He searched for a universal law that would unite all observations that we call science. Such as finding that all forms of energy are merely different manifestations of the same power and only perceived as different because of our limited sensing ability.
The more we learn the more we find how little we know. IMO
arch1 – great blog! your work throughout SG is greatly appreciated. Have you watched any of Richard Feynman’s video lectures? Truly a beautiful teacher. His innate sense of wonder, infectious energy and ability to express the most complex of ideas with a simplistic eloquence is unmatched. Dr. KSS possesses a similar skill in his medical postings.

One thing of great value was,,, Make sure your premise is correct, then everything falls into place naturally.
If a project or study is begun with the wrong premise all of your results will be faulty.
Too much of what passes for science involves coming up with an idea and then looking for evidence that supports it.
The first thing to do is a little testing to see if your idea/premise is faulty.
People tend to find only what they are looking for. IMO
I couldn’t agree more. Anthropogenic climate change is the perfect example of an ideology in search of verifiable and repeatable evidence. Completely defies the basic tenets of the scientific method. Maddening.

ben I am highly in favor of this sort of industry. Organic chemistry is near unlimited in using one form of carbon compound for another to cut costs or produce a better result. There is a huge amount of so called wood waste which could be used in applications such as you cite. Dual benefit of reducing waste and better or lower cost product. Feedstock could also be corn stalks, straw or many other sorts of agriculture residue,,, even spent barley from the malting for beer industry.
I dream of 3D machines printing out houses etc- speed, precision, varying shapes, low cost – I’d love to try a cob house. They look so darling, but doing it by hand – egads.

I really look forward to this sort of advance. We spend so much on our dwellings, and this will be a real jump forward in affordability. Robotics will put so many people out of work, though. We had best own the companies making and using the robots. 🙂
This is a natural continuation of modular building and factory built homes. Re robots,,, every new technology causes some job loss but brings more jobs in an area that better uses human talent. We were designed with the will and freedom to create new uses and things.

Frank, I think there are only two areas that animate our overly politicized bureaucracies; tax cheats – because the state is determined to grab every red cent it thinks its owed; political enemies – so they can use their knowledge to punish their political enemies and help keep their side in power, aka the IRS/Tea Party scandal. As you know by now I love to harp on what a wondrous life form our fertile top soil is. As pointed out in recent science warm, moist , aerated soil exhales six times as much CO2 as all of that from burning fossil fuels,,, or man’s activities.
This is more proof that CO2 in ice cores is only a trailing indicator of warming between ice ages.,,, not a cause.
Would you like a good cheap experiment you can do to disprove “Runaway Greenhouse effect”. I know of no credible scientist who has actually done this as it is so simple. Obtain two 2 liter soda bottles. One may be used and empty. Buy the other in the mixer section of your local grocer, store brand carbonated water is fine. let both bottles, after half filling the empty one with tap water, reach room temperature. Cap the half full water and shake it ,then remove cap for now. Take the new CO2 water and shake it and loosen the cap only far enough so you can let pressure expel about half of the liquid and immediatey securely cap both bottles. The one you put water in is now half full of normal atmosphere with perhaps a small bit of extra water vapor,,, insignificant. The purchased bottle will half full of 1oo% CO2 atmosphere with insignificant water vapor,,, at this time.
ON a bright clear sunny day,June would be ideal as sun is directly overhead in Northern Hemisphere. Let them sit there. If runaway CO2 Is true that bottle will explode. Continue experiment until you are satisfied. Eventually one may break through sun degrading plastic, possibly a year or two.
If you don’t want to waste that time it is quickly shown runaway greenhouse is bogus.

Frank – As mentioned to earlier, I have a question needing to be answered. I was rereading Dr. KSS’ article about $BLPH (Bellophoron) where he discussed pulmonary hypertension, nitric oxide, etc.
About 25 years ago I became aware of altitude sickness while in Colorado and then confirmed it when visiting my Mother in Albuquerque. It was a shock after the years I had spent at high altitudes with no problems. Earlier this year I am trout fishing where I needed to climb a series of stairs to get to the cabin where I was staying, and this is at low altitude (Missouri), and I thought I was going to have cardiac arrest after climbing those stairs. Could either the altitude sickness and the “stair climbing” be related? It seems to me, after reading Dr. KSS’ article, they are but wanted to check with someone smarter than I am. Of course, this last sentence includes almost all the Gummunity but you’re the Mayor.

Yes As we age our oxygen transfer in the lungs gets worse as does our general condition. Stairs you could run up when young deplete your oxygen store and you have to pause and rebuild it.
Circulation of blood/heart action affects it also. Altitude sickness is really oxygen deprivation and all organs suffer.
If I spend a little time in Portland OR area,,,sea level, I have to re-acclimate myself when I return home, 4000 ft elevation.
Frank – While I’m inquiring I also want to ask you about Great Blue Heron’s and why they would have much lighter colored wing patches this time of year. I presumed, rightly or wrongly, that these might be “bleached” from the sun in more southernly climes prior to them migrating back north. This wasn’t a single bird but most of the several Great Blue’s I saw. There is a nesting area on the river bordering the area I was fishing with a half-dozen or more nests.

John, I’d be more inclined to surmise the color change is related to their mating season and their diet.
Ben – Thank you for the video. It is genuinely appreciated. The backs of the wings where it is a lighter gray was close to snow white on the herons I saw. I did watch them build their nests – stick by stick- and start their mating rituals. I think you may have hit on something mentioning their diet. I will do more inquiring.

Gentlemen, I saw something rather unique yesterday or perhaps this was my first opportunity to witness this. I am dog/cat sitting at a home on a golf course that has hundreds of Canadian Geese that spend the winter. Yesterday morning rather than the gangs as usual, they were paired up, yup in twos, squawking up such a storm I had in investigate. It was a beautiful sight although the Golf course would NOT.
LuLu – Canada geese, like swans, mate for life, which doesn’t preclude interference from another gander. This becomes a vocal melee of the first water! They are an issue on golf courses and here they are captured and transported to a federal refuge.

Yes They separate from the flock and resume their pairs to nest. Here they will make nest in the cat tail reeds and set while it is snowing. The gander is watchful to lead away or drive off predators/marauders. Every year one that hatches on my place brings the goslings by for a swim on my small pond before herding them down to an old logging mill pond where other geese also bring their young. A few will gosling sit while the parents go in search of food.
This evening I spotted a pair of geese stealing corn from my chicken feeder, as I had left the door open for chickens to graze on new grass and weeds around my house. Last evening I heard a mallard duck quacking softly and peep peep peep answering so she has just hatched out a brood in my swamp/wetland area.
