I will from time to time post new things found and things of interest to me in the natural world. I will attempt to answer all questions to limits of my ability and reference. Nothing that advances knowledge off limits except personal attacks and things not suitable for a Travis forum. Please show basis for opinion expressed.

I have posted elsewhere that no one has yet said what would be the optimum climate for this Earth. There is no doubt that it changes continually over long periods of overlapping cycles. We really are quite ignorant as to how these work and are in early stages of discovery.
Here is some proof that my earlier posts saying that we have been experiencing some extremely good growing weather over the last century is shown to be true. Some of our activities have doubtless had at least a minor impact on that. How much is, unknowable and thus unprovable.

A great lot of that photosynthesis increase has been in growing food for our burgeoning human population as otherwise we would face the famine that so many warned was soon coming during the last half of the last century. With the slight temperature rise the ability to grow food has reached a few miles further toward the polar areas.
There is some evidence that we may be now facing a cooling period and retreat of those growing zones.WE would have to make up for that by growing more food on fewer acres and a big limitation for that is water for agriculture as much fertile land is only fertile with irrigation water that is running out in availability from wells. Many aquifers have been severely depleted. Can we desalinate salty or brackish water to make up for that?
That is a question we soon must face. IMO

Researchers restore the memory performance of Methuselah mice to a juvenile stage
Date:

Source:
University of Bonn
Summary:
Memory performance decreases with increasing age. Cannabis can reverse these ageing processes in the brain. This was shown in mice by scientists at the University of Bonn with their colleagues at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel). Old animals were able to regress to the state of two-month-old mice with a prolonged low-dose treatment with a cannabis active ingredient. This opens up new options, for instance, when it comes to treating dementia.
I do not want a juvenile brain. I would love to have my body rejuvenated. The study cited gives THC as the agent that improves memory in age mice and has not been studied in humans, often mouse studies do NOT indicate human effect.
THC has been shown to have adverse effect in juvenile brains in humans.
In my youth it was common for my neighborhood, and especially so in those with Southern roots, to have Chicken Dinner Sunday. I often wondered why. Perhaps this is the answer.

Bats the only flying mammal? No squirrels glide/fly in a very advanced manner:

The Northern flying squirrel has a large range but very few people have seen one as they are nocturnal animals.

Frank – A few years ago I was at a friends lake house at Lake of the Ozarks. On a screened in porch surrounded by oaks, he had placed a flying squirrel feeder filled with unsalted peanuts. Just after sundown, his first customer came gliding in. Despite years out of doors, I had never seen one. It was a wonderous experience and I started reading all I could find about these little guys. Thanks for the picture and links.

Here’s your flying squirrel. 🙂 Sorry, Friday humor.

Optical communication using solitons on a photonic chip
http://www.nanowerk.com/nanotechnology-news/newsid=46985.php
Ben very interesting. I think that is definitely the way chips of the future are going.
This world has become so communication dependent that is the only way demand can be satisfied. I don’t pretend to understand it but it seems like horizontal lines are produced by laser and then a 180 tooth electronic comb is used to make 179 channels in the gaps between teeth to project energy to distort the horizontal light lines In all radial directions to impart info almost like a diffraction pattern.
Kind of like am/fm combined radio waves on steroids combined with a diffraction grating reflector.
The decoder for that must be astounding,,, and fast. 1000 times gigabit.
In weaving the warp threads are the longitudinal ,, along the length of the fabric and the weft threads are the transverse,,, along the width. Those laser generated lines would be like the weft with the warp lines removed.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warp_and_woof
Thank you for commenting on the solitons article and casting few more rays of light on the subject Frank. 🙂
Hmmm – do you think POETF is at risk of being leap-frogged before they optimize their new chip? I don’t know enough about chips to know.
Sharon sorry for not catching this sooner. POETF leapfrog?
Possibly tho entirely different technology and approach. Poet uses Cadmium Sulfide for chip,,,, no silicon, just like photo detectors and laser produced light pulses with a quad chip array for extremely fast computer chips. The Soliton is more aligned as a method to increase data sent down a fiber strand,,, so no direct competition. In fact they might be used together symbiotically?
🙂
That’s good to know. Thank you, Frank, for taking the time to think it through and answer; you’re the best, and I so do appreciate you.
Frank (from the other Frank),IMO, for someone who “doesn’t pretend to understand it” you seem to have a good grasp as to how it might work.
Regards,
Frank
What Einstein called “spooky action at a distance” may be the key to unhackable communication;
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/d-brief/2017/06/15/quantum-communcation-networks/#.WULDDHxtlph
In theory that should work ,,,IF it is possible to send quantum packets via satellite reliably. Not something to invest in right now IMO.

As I have pointed out before the vast preponderance of the biologic activity on this Earth is in the top foot of soils. More carbon is thus below the surface of the ground than all else combined, Even without counting fossil fuels and tied up in rock that is so.
http://www.pnnl.gov/news/release.aspx?id=4395&utm_source=Google%2B&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=NB-Malak
That is one reason that as ice ages warm CO2 is a lagging indicator, often by 400 t0 800 years. Cold soggy soils have little biologic activity but as they dry and warm up life swells in abundance. That is followed by rapid surface plant growth as CO2 levels rise to a range that is more conducive to lush growth.
Dense growth holds more of the CO2 in reach of trees and great forests form or as is the case where it is always warm you find jungles. Warm areas when deforested easily become desert as water is lost, CO2 is rapidly released as soil activity races along until organic matter is used up.
Trees and surface water are great holders of CO2 and act as buffers to dampen spikes in atmospheric supply. Right now we are at the low end of the requirement range for plant growth and our food supply could be increased a great deal if it doubled.
There is no GOD particle. Why do I so say? Particles involve mass, quanta of mass.
I contend that while any thing/mass may be made from energy, from there is a vast gulf of action. We have discovered certain Laws of matter and can to an extent predict events from causation due to law. Only matter, not energy is bound by that law.
Energy does not exist in stasis and is eternal fluid except for the portion that has been made mass. Our attempts to measure energy are by measuring the actions/effects that it causes. To measure any thing you must have reference points and energy has none so with energy all is possible and an electron is found where ever you look for it. Your looking imposed a condition for that instant and no other. Energy simply does not operate under the same rule as mass/matter and quantum mechanics is an attempt at reconciling what cannot be equal. There are points of relationship or relativity but no universal explanation. That is what Einstein sought and did not find. He recognized “spooky action at a distance”.

I have previously posted that experiences of a generation are somehow passed on,Re my observations. Following link seems to confirm that.
https://scienmag.com/worm-studies-investigate-how-grandparents-experiences-can-affect-our-genes/
If this proves true it would mean that adaptation of species occurs much more rapidly than previously thought, relying on mutation.
I posit that the genes responsible are already in all species and only need switched on or off. That would also account for how species supposedly extinct, mysteriously are found again, sometimes much later.
An old saying is that; the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. That is true in many ways. All of the accomplishments of humanity have begun with a woman who shaped a child while still in her womb to become what eventually brought any great thing. Various hormones released at the right times determine much of how the developing new human will change the world. The default when something is amiss goes toward the female side, which has the greatest genetic influence. The Y chromosome which determines maleness is comparatively much weaker and increasingly fragile. That is despite the fact that men tend to be more muscular and physically stronger.
The brains of the two sexes differ in operation and approach to problem solving and that difference makes for a stronger and better humanity. One that considers much more in the extension of probabilities and abilities.
Here are some recent findings that support that view.
http://stanmed.stanford.edu/2017spring/how-mens-and-womens-brains-are-different.html
The French have a saying,,, Vive la Difference, which though often winked at in the sense of the pleasure that men and women find in each other in coupling, is much greater than that in the sense that the two can accomplish much more than either could separately,,, a synergistic effect. An example is the work of Marie Curie, who discovered radium and opened a whole new field in radiative energy. I consider that to be a world changing event, that has yet to reach anywhere near it’s full potential.

Ben Thank you for post. I would not rush to invest quite yet.
The last sentence of article says it all and they easily just toss it in.
The main problem: keeping the process going.
That may well have no solution as process is contained by a tremendous magnetic field and if breached to supply would allow plasma to come shooting out just like an H-bomb.

Chinese scientists have found a plastic-eating fungus
https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2017/09/chinese-scientists-have-found-a-plastic-eating-fungus
Ben Yes plastics are hydrocarbons like we are and soil bacteria/fungi will digest and break them down. If buried deep that does not happen to plastic. and in the ocean plastics break up into evermore fine pieces, most of which float and are ingested by marine life with unknown consequences. Likely not good.
