I have refused to buy any pot stocks for recreational purposes. Let me tell you why. After recreational pot was legalized in Colorado a couple of years ago, a similar statute was suggested for Arizona (where I live). The pot lobby campaigned aggressively. But a couple of officers from Colorado were recruited to tell the real story to the voters.(the governor was one of them I believe). Babies were being born to mothers who smoked pot in their pregnancy and pot is lipid soluble and stays in you for many weeks. (note that the brain has lots of lipids). The fetal alcoholic baby syndrome is bad but it is relatively small potatoes compared to the devastating effects that pot has on the developing embryonic and fetal brains. The family disaster and subsequent ensuing societal stress will be enormous. Unfortunately recreational pot is being legalized in more and more states. I doubt if this tsunami can be slowed. We worry and campaign about climate change but unfortunately this pot scourge is impending and with a shorter timeline. Incidentally the pot statute was defeated in Arizona but I believe it will be place on the ballot again for sure. It did not lose by much.
You brought up a great point, there needs to be strict regulations for the use of medical pot, however I doubt goverments will get it right .. all they see is another stream of tax revenue.
History teaches that strict regulation is the not the answer. Education, personal responsibility, freedom of choice, support and rehabilitation when needed and getting the governemnt out of the way are better ideas. Banks found a way around strict regulations and crashed the economy. Pharmaceutical companies find a way around strict regulations. The FDA approves dangerous drugs all the time, because those doing the approving come from the drug companies or are bought off by them. The government bans the ability of sick and dying people to use cannabis as a treatment, and instead permits only poisonous solutions like chemo or radiation, forcing people to seek alternative treatment in countries with more freedoms. I agree with you that local governments want the tax revenue, but legalization is the right thing to do.
Ok for those who are sick and can get some comfort from pot. However, I do not want this to impact my family and future grandkids. The risks need to be widely shared – I suspect if either parent was high, it probably impacts the fetus as sigmull has expressed. I also think it would be a huge problem for our country to take care of those born impaired from fetal marijuanna. We all pay in the end.
Anyone who would smoke pot while pregnant isn’t *not* smoking pot while pregnant because it’s illegal.
And fetal alcohol syndrome is relatively small potatoes because anyone who isn’t a psycho or a degenerate alcoholic stops drinking while pregnant. They stop completely even though a glass of wine every now and then causes absolutely zero damage – the poison is in the dose and the liver is good at what it does. But who wants to take the risk with a baby? Same with pot.
And the officers from Colorado who testified were probably recruited by the pot lobby from Colorado because they want to keep being the people who sell pot to people from Arizona.
I wonder if you also favor making alcohol and cigarettes illegal? How about banning all foods that aren’t healthy for mothers and their babies? Let’s just make anything that is potentially dangerous in any circumstance illgal and fill the prisons, at taxpayer expense, with those that don’t obey. You think making the cannabis flower illegal and locking people up in cages is a good solution?
I hope the “tsunami” can’t be slowed, because it impedes on personal liberties and ruins the lives of countless families because of the ridiculous views of religous zealots, the hemp industry, pharmaceutical industry, alcohol and tobacco industry, paper industry and anyone else that feels threatened by the amzing and multi-purpose plant cannabis. Give me a pot head over a drunk or pharmaceutical zombie anyday. I also live in Arizona and hope they finally legalize it next election. It is long overdue.
I just added another cannabis stock on the recent dip, but would definitely stay clear of Cannabis Wheaton and the shady team behind that stock. Aphria and Canopy Growth are the top plays and both have the potential to double over the next 12-24 months in my opinion.
You have well expressed my own concerns. There is no way I want to be involved in supporting the “pot smoking industry” no matter how much money is to be made. That being said, cannabis is just another plant that may well have some healing compounds that could have some value in major areas of disease such as epilepsy and other difficult to treat diseases. It also holds promise to provide pain relief and replace the very dangerous opiods that have become such a serious addiction problem. It is a minefield trying to find a company that is viable and also meets my ethical standards
The really important news in all this tax grab legalization, is not for the pot heads, or our Lords of State, but for the environment. Several states have already opened up test farms and Ag projects to bring back Hemp production. From clothes, plastics, cars, building materials, rope, linens, medicine, food, paper. Heck paper alone would save a few rain forests. Ever since Dupont, Mellon, Hearst and Anslinger back door’ed us for their further profits, the US has been completely out of the market, which also means the world market hasn’t advanced as well as it could have. No mistake, it will become a huge cash crop and is certainly better than growing corn for destroying our cars. As far as actual pot goes, whatever, it is no worse than alcohol and in any case not the Nanny States job to dictate to us. As a teen of the 70’s I can tell you, it certainly was no gateway drug, but it sure was enjoyable.
I believe Cannabis Wheaton is a total scam. I frequently speculate in a lot of stocks, but I would not risk a dime in this one. Best of luck to anyone who does.
That’s looking more and more likely.
Just them using the name “Wheaton” to try and suck people in, i enough to run the other direction.
Alcohol a poison is legal and no testimonials of it’s effects. And prescription drugs that million take and drive and work while taking them. Society and the bigotry is just mind blowing. How this article got the comments it has gotten is bewildering. And Travis s probably wondering how these comments came to fruition.
You never know where the comments will lead… some topics generate instant rancor.
Ha! No sooner do I sell the stock (Physicians Realty) because I don’t see them having a good pathway to a higher dividend in the future, then they actually raise the dividend. Surprise!
It’s not a big increase, about 2%, and I still don’t think they are really in a position to do much growing of the dividend, but, well, it’s something.
Pot, Alcohol, these are minor drugs, what about the main drug that harms not only kids but their parents as well?? I am talking sugar. Do some research and then reduce it in you and your kids lives. Everyone will be happier…Seriously, the roller coaster that is created by sugar negatively impacts so many areas of your life, and it is in everything……..
Travis-
Thinking about the performance of REITS, do you have a concern over WPC having a 20% position in Retail?
Not particularly, though I don’t own that one and haven’t looked at the details lately.
