“At an executive meeting of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China chaired by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on 31 March, China extended for two years the validity period for subsidies on new energy vehicle purchases and NEV purchase tax exemption as part of a broad range of stimulus measures aimed at boosting China’s post-COVID19 economic recovery. The NEV purchase incentives were due to expire at the end of 2020. As China begins its economic recovery from COVID-19 disruption, it is clear that country retains its commitment to supporting the ongoing electrification of transportation. @griffin What do you know about the replacement costs for EV batteries when they eventually fail? Or the lifetime of the batteries?
I’ve had a couple of people tell me that EVs might be simpler mechanically to maintain, but eventually their batteries fail and that is a major expense. My next car is going to be an electric one, more likely a hybrid, so I need to start getting to know these things.
I would not be surprised that the EV battery price might seem a bit exuberant. When dealing with ‘Classic Cars’ you quickly find that the $um of the parts is greater than the whole this has long applied to the automobile industry in general. EV automobiles are still in their infancy (despite having been around for over a 100 years)
and as such don’t have the competition that exist for the rest of the industry. There are a few EV battery recyclers at work already developing their technology and there will be rebuild EV batteries in the future. The price of batteries has dropped significantly in the last decade and will continue. The price of EVs will drop in the next 3-5 years so that they will be cheaper than the old ICE auto. What I would suggest is to do a search for an EV user forum there are a few out there on the net and see if you can determine what the actual maintenance savings might be.
@griffin I will note that the cautionary stories about eventual battery failure come from people who neither own an electric vehicle nor plan on buying one (currently).
My 2005 Volvo XC70 isn’t ready to give up the ghost yet though it does have sporadic electrical weirdnesses evidenced in the form of peculiar yet mostly baseless dashboard warning messages. (It was some former lease vehicle and I got a good price on it in 2008 .)
Yes, I want the subsidies to continue, and battery recycling technology to keep marching on its merry way.
Thanks for the suggestion about EV user forums.

Really interesting article, Griffin.
In this house we have hot-water heat (which I love) and I’m thinking of replacing the gas furnace with a heat pump system. We also have a gas water heater and I hadn’t thought of replacing the water heater with a heat pump system, until I read this article – and all the following comments.
In my in-laws’ house in Idaho we have an old & inefficient ducted oil furnace heating system, and an electric water heater. There I have been thinking of skipping the conversion to a gas furnace, and going directly to a heat pump system.
I’ve got lots to learn about heat pumps!
i I posted that hoping someone was thinking green. My biggest concern is how reliable is the new technology and that maybe experience installation. Other than that there are rebates to bring the cost down comparable with gas and electric. If you could report back when it is all on rebates how it went I would think that would be helpful, I want to buy property in Oregon if the stock market will continue to be good to me. I will be out of the red in another couple of months.
@griffin
The local power company in that part of Idaho offers substantial rebates for installing heat pump systems – but only if you already have an electric furnace, darn it. Since the house there has that oil-fired furnace, we’re not eligible. I hadn’t thought about swapping out the electric water heater, but might be tempted by a good rebate.
(These are the improvements that a rise in the price of $ARTH aka Arch Therapeutics would make so much easier!)
I have friends in Oregon and we go there for vacations quite regularly. Amongst other areas there, I love the Oregon coast.
