I personally have about 4-5% of my portfolio in gold and silver coins, and another 10-15% in gold mining and royalty companies — I consider gold miners to be speculative but have invested in a few, my favorite investment in the sector is in the royalty companies, with my preference being Sandstorm Gold (SAND) today, though I also have a large position in Franco-Nevada (FNV), which is much more richly valued, and in tiny Maverix Metals, a newer royalty company.
They will only do well, of course, if gold goes up in value — I’ve invested in the sector for much of the past decade, and on balance it has been a drag on my portfolio to this point.
