written by reader Scandium, Cobalt, and Water Purification: Clean Teq Holdings,Volume 2, 2018

By hendrixnuzzles, January 31, 2018

2017 was a year of tremendous accomplishment for Clean Teq Holdings in every respect.

We saw remarkable achievements in mine construction, in finance, and in market development, with landmark contracts in every business segment;

We saw a complex business appear as if by magic, including business offices on four continents, and the launch of business website in the water division;

We were informed of superb existing and newly-formed strategic partnerships,
with the likes of Airbus, Peng-Xin Mining, Chinese state and power entities, Chinalco, and Multotec;

We were witness to a major off-take agreement with a leading battery manufacture;

We learned of an astute acquisition of a controlling interest in a VRB business by Mr. Friedland;

We learned of deep and valuable research and development support at prestigious universities and manufacturers;
and we became sure of unseen low-cost manufacturing contacts and alliances.

And oh-by-the-way, we got a listing on the TSX.

The company inspires confidence and optimism. Robert Friedland has a deep long-term strategy, and he knows what he is doing.
I am not sure what is more impressive: His strategic vision, or his managerial talent in executing it.

Clean Teq is a company that is worth following. It is by far my largest position.
There are a lot of companies with good concepts. But Clean Teq has a deep and brilliant strategic concept which is at the heart of major world trends; a revolutionary technology; and a management that executes flawlessly.
**
GOING FORWARD: SUITABLE TOPICS FOR THIS THREAD

1. CLEAN TEQ HOLDINGS, CLEAN TEQ WATER, and their interests, or related companies.

2. Miners and producers of COBALT, VANADIUM, SCANDIUM; also nickel, zinc, graphite, lithium, rare earths, silica, and manganese.

3. WATER PURIFICATION, especially when tied into mineral extraction therefrom.

4. “TECHNO MINERS” and other innovators in mining and material extraction

See notes below on thread and topic overlaps, which are unavoidable.
**
One year ago this week, I wrote an article on Clean Teq Holdings. It was a speculative company, but
one with a visionary and proven leader, dramatic potential in specific, attractive commodities,
innovative methods and IP for mineral extraction, and big ambitions in water purification.

Clean Teq Holdings defied easy categorization, and continues to do so.
One year later, Clean Teq has not disappointed. Clean Teq has exceeded all reasonable expectations.
**
If you need background on Clean Teq, I refer you to the predecessor of this thread: “Scandium, Cobalt,
and Water Purification: Clean Teq Holdings”, where you will also find the guidelines and rules for this
thread; and to the Clean Teq and Clean Teq Water websites, which warrant close examination.

OUR BIAS AND BASIC VIEW
This thread is for those who believe in the coming EV wave, light weighting of transport, and most importantly,
in the importance of energy storage and batteries of all scales;
and also, it is for those who believe that the disruptions caused thereby will be rapid.

Because of this opinion, it follows that the existing viable battery technologies and the materials needed
for them are important. We anticipate rapid change; we subscribe to the Tony Seba “Disruption Scenario”,
that suggests disruptiv changes are occuring faster.
If you disagree with the Disruption Scenario, or the eventual proliferation of EVs,
that is fine; but please do not debate it on this thread. The thread is for those who believe in the future of battery power,
and in the immediate opporunities in commodities related to batteries and energy storage.
We will be able to see in shortly whether we are right or wrong in this belief.
If it takes longer than we think, we will complain about ”being early.”

My perspective is for the next five years. That is “long term”. This is not a trading thread.
Occasionally short-term opportunities are appropriate to call out,
but short-term trading is not the emphasis here.

On the other hand should restrain ourselves from too much attention
to developments and materials for technologies that are likely to take longer than five years to have an impact.
We are looking for investable ideas, not 10 year forecasts on the Future of Civilization.
So let’s keep it down on hydrogen fuel cells and molten salt batteries for a couple of months.
**
NOTES ON THREAD AND TOPIC OVERLAPS
Our assumption is that Li-NCM, VRB’s, and zinc batteries are going to be the main battery formats purchased,
installed or contracted for in the near-term, hence the commodities needed for them are of interest.

New battery technologies are better discussed on the #batteries thread ,
unless they involve a vertical commodity/battery producer.
We are interested in what is going to have an impact in five years.

For example, if you are convinced that Google is about to conquer the world with a molten salt battery,
then come on over here and recommend Morton Salt as a buy-out candidate.

But debate whether molten salt batteries have a future, and when, on the #batteries thread.

News that shows increasing penetration on solar are relevant,
as they confirm the importance of large-scale energy storage.
But we would like to know who is getting the contracts and what type of battery they are using.

There is going to be some unavoidable overlap. Nickel and manganese sources are swing metals,
sometimes they may be better discussed on the Hard Asset thread as base metals.

If you make a post on the wrong thread, don’t worry too much, there are
no fines or jail time. I do it myself all the time and I understand it can be confusing.
You can also use Travis’ new cross-reference gizmo.

There is no doubt there was a lot of speculation based on thinking China would have a rich market for EVs in US.
I did not buy on that basis and will continue to hold for Scandium in aircraft but primarily for water purification if the hype comes to fruition.
The world will soon face shortages of potable water for direct consumptions and suitable for irrigation that will not poison soil with mineral build up.
Alkalization.

$CTEQF Ionic >
Clean TeQ / Ionic to Form Water JV
After extensive testing and development work, Clean TeQ has formally notified Ionic of its intention to exercise its option to form a Joint Venture to progress the commercialization of graphene-based water treatment technologies

Dear Ionic shareholders and friends,

We are excited to announce that our partner in water treatment R&D, Clean TeQ has formally notified us of its intention to form a joint venture (JV Co) with us for the commercialisation of our graphene-based water treatment technologies.

Over the past 18 months, Clean TeQ and Ionic have undertaken an extensive program of work together with Monash University to develop, manufacture and apply graphene oxide membranes for water filtration applications.

Through this program of work, Clean TeQ and Ionic have successfully developed a process to manufacture high purity graphene oxide that can be applied to a membrane support to create a highly efficient graphene nanofiltration membrane (GO-Membrane). Significantly, the GO-Membrane manufacturing process has been demonstrated on commercial scale industrial equipment.

Clean TeQ has now exercised their option under our previous contractual agreement to form JV Co. JV Co will be focused on achieving commercial scale production of graphene oxide and GO-Membranes, as well as water purification modules targeted at wholesale and retail customers. Clean TeQ’s founder and Chief Technology Officer, Peter Voigt describes the opportunity:

Through the use of advanced materials, like graphene oxide, we have an opportunity to significantly improve and grow the membrane water filtration market. Graphene’s amazing properties provide a window into a new world of water recovery and reuse.

Full details of Clean TeQ’s announcement can be found here: https://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20180924/pdf/43yl2512r7vrvb.pdf

Freshwater scarcity and the move to water reuse is driving growth in the water membrane filtration market and in spiral membranes such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. The spiral membrane market is estimated at USD 5 billion in 2018 and is expected to grow to USD 8 billion by 2023. The major constraint to growth is the high operating costs for the end user. The development of a cost-effective graphene-oxide (GO) membrane could displace a large proportion of the existing reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membrane technologies as well as creating opportunities for new water filtration applications.

Graphene oxide-based membranes have the potential to deliver significant benefits due to their high water flux, tunability and non-fouling properties. The advantages of the membranes over existing commercially available membrane technologies include lower cost, increased flow, better water recovery and lower energy costs.

Following Clean TeQ’s formal notification, we will now get to work on the process of forming the JV company and progressing the testing, development and commercialization of graphene oxide and GO membranes, as well as water purification modules targeted at wholesale and retail customers. The joint venture with Ionic will be structured as a newly incorporated joint venture owned 75% by Clean TeQ and 25% by Ionic.

This progress represents a major milestone for Ionic. It demonstrates that our graphene technology is attracting the attention of major industry players and corporations and that it has potential applications in some of the largest and most significant global markets. It shows where our first revenues will likely come from and it highlights that we have a rare and valuable capability in bringing advanced technologies out of the university research environment and into commercial reality. This is our first major step on the road to commercialising graphene technologies in an enormous range of applications and global markets.

All the best,

The Ionic Team

$FYI – Cobalt Miners News For The Month Of September 2018
by Matt Bohlsen – Includes: AEOMF, AMSLF, ARRRF, ARTTF, AZRMF, BBBMF, BHP, BKTPF

Summary
Cobalt spot prices were slightly down in September but appear to have stabilized just below US$30/lb.
Cobalt market news – Any reduction of the cobalt content would likely be far outweighed by a four-to-five-fold increase in demand for batteries.
Mining News – “Cobalt heading towards 2020s deficit.”
DRC H1 2018 – Cobalt production jumped 37.6% to 52,491 tonnes.
Cobalt miners news – China Molybdenum increases net profit by 162.95% year on year. RNC Minerals hits a massive high grade gold deposit at their Beta Hunt mine in Australia, ~C$38m so far in 2 weeks.

“Reduced cobalt electric car batteries delayed amid price fall. This month provided further evidence that cobalt bulls may rest a little bit easier – rapidly rising global battery production volumes should more than make up for ongoing cobalt thrifting”

#FYI

Just last week Versarian, $VRS:London had an offer to purchase shares at 20% off the closing price on 9/21 with no commission. This was handled thru PRIMARY BID, a “crowd funding” company in London.
I never heard of PrimaryBid or anything like this being done, so I sent them a letter asking about procedure, since my “eligibility” test failed. Here is their response:

Hi,
At the moment you need to be a UK resident to participate but we are looking to expand into Europe please keep an eye out for announcements.

Thanks Gr8Full! Makes me want to jump into my account and do the investing no-no, that is average down!
What bugs me about a lot of articles published on the internet is the lack of a date when originally written. I know there is a way to find when the article was placed on the internet but it is a pain. From the article, I can see that it must have been recent since it talks about .40 cents per share, but that could have been edited.

CleanTeQ has just come out with another polished Corporate Presentation. Here’s the link.

http://clients3.weblink.com.au/pdf/CLQ/02029547.pdf

There are the usual facts that we have seen before, plus some updated charts and graphs, some pro-China statements, a page devoted to each of Nickel, Cobalt, and Scandium, a checklist checked, financing obtained to date, operating costs and technical outcomes, and a summary of the 2018 DFS. Of particular interest to me is the latest proposed timeline to production on page 14. It could be well into 2019 that financing and off takes are finalized, and first production is currently projected to be mid 2021. Also of interest are the upbeat statements on page 22 regarding off take agreements, including “considerable demand from end users and intermediaries”. Hopefully, we will find out soon enough.
