Friday File: The Big List, plus a buy on great earnings and a few speculations

Full summary of sentiment on my Real Money Portfolio, plus notes on Berkshire, Fairfax, Ligand, Shopify, Omega Healthcare, Square, U.S. Gold, Yatra and some other SPAC speculations

By Travis Johnson, Stock Gumshoe, February 16, 2018

The ides of February are dismal and dreary here in the wet and grey Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts, but we remain hopeful of the sunshine to come. What do I have to share with you, dear Irregulars, as we seek a little brightness to end the week?

Well, I do have a few buys to note — I continue to want to maintain a large cash balance in anticipation of better buying opportunities down the road, but some investments continue to appeal either because the valuation has gotten too low to ignore, or because I want to reload some of the speculative portion of my portfolio as past speculations roll off (mostly on good terms, thankfully).

And I’ve got the master list to share that summarizes all of my substantial positions in the Real Money Portfolio — you can click on any of these to get the long version in past articles and more in-depth navel-gazing from my Annual Review pieces over the past few weeks, but I know lots of folks want to quick thoughts so I’ll share that this week, too.

AMZN: Fantastic earnings, still can’t buy above $1,300
APTV: Buy below $98, leadership in self-driving cars trusted by major automakers
ATUSF: Added recently to core Altius Minerals (ALS.TO) position, buyable up to $12 for long-term base commodity exposure (copper, potash, coal, etc.)
BABA: Holding July 2019 $260 call options, extraordinary top-line growth
BOMN: Watch, maybe nibble below ~$21 but wait for better prices well below 2X book value.
BRK-B: Hold long term, buy under $195. I added slightly during the dip this month.
COR: Reduced position dramatically last year when dividend growth potential shrunk, hold and look for buying opportunity if price falls to ~$80, depending on Spring dividend announcement
CTEQF (CLQ.AX, CLQ.TO): My favorite cobalt play, many catalysts this year but buyable up to US$1.80 if cobalt exposure is wanted and risk tolerance high.
DIS: Buy below $110, continued strength in content development and pending direct-to-consumer products this year and next could fight “cord cutting” weakness
ECSIF (ECS.TO): Second ...
