I wouldn’t trust that AH in the White House!
Are you referring to The president of the United States? If so your disrespect for the office is not particularly welcome. there are people from all sides of the political spectrum here. Be an adult
First, many thanks, Travis, for the lengthy analysis of the stocks and underlying situations for them. And yes, I certainly agree this is a good time to have some cash standing by, but I seem to have blown most of mine on a marijuana spending spree.
Next, regarding the above comment, I understand that we should show respect for the office of the President of the U.S. I totally agree to that and think most of us do. BUT — as dealerdebi pointed out there are Irregulars from all sides of the political spectrum here. We probably range from leftist libtards all the way across the spectrum to right-wing whackos, and a whole bunch of us somewhere in the middle between those two extremes. So I would suggest that making a political statement about the current resident of the White House does not necessarily mean you are disrespecting the office — just commenting about the man. And I do believe all politicians should be fair game for critical comment and analysis. Sorry to say, this is getting harder to do, to have a courteous discourse about politics, and to agree to disagree, with becoming disagreeable, because it seems we have become polarized into two camps.
Yes, politicians should be fair game for considerate comment but simply calling someone an AH hardly elevates the conversation and reveals a particular lack of intellectual depth. This is a forum for investors. Plenty other places to go and rage, jazzman.
Resect is give where respect is EARNED.
Maybe you would prefer Stalin..?
I generally just drop out of any lists that get heavy on politics. I just dropped my last newsletter from Agora because of all the political hype and nonsense. If it continues here I will also drop out. Take the politics somewhere else.
Alpine…you obviously do NOT own any Amazon stocks. Just how do you separate politics way from what happened there yesterday?
We have to, as investors come to grips with the outright attack our Republic is under and its long term effects on our financial markets. The entire world is in a state of shock. -WE- are building up our military, starting another arms race and openly threatening anyone we don’t like with a nuclear first strike. Our allies are leaving us. We just took on more debt in one stroke of the pen than any other time in history. And as if to add agony to injury, we have turned back every environmental protection that we have fought the last 50 years for…!
ALL American’s left or right are in the same boat and I don’t about you I’m scared shitless for my grandkids future.
Frankly, I’m blown away that anyone here can carry on like everything is hunky-dory and NONE of it will have any impact on on our financial future.
Travis suggests a fat wallet. I whole hearted agree. If you don’t want to face the facts of WHY that is good advise I guess there is nothing wrong with keeping your head in the sand.
No disrespect intended.
Me neither…and Trump gets the respect he earns. Hard to do when you are grabbing pussies and mocking the disabled.
Been with IIPR since they went public, purchases between $15.60 and $20.00; avg basis right at $18.00. For most of 2017, that initial bet didn’t look so good…patience has paid off as currently up 48%+ . Will be sitting on this for the long run. Also had chance to be part of a private equity placement with a MJ grower/retailer getting ready to receive final ok from their state to open for business in next 60 days. Between both, have about 10% of total investments connected to the cannabis market; about 2/3 of the $ I have invested in biotech market. Better living through pharmaceuticals!
The future of retail is Walmart, not Amazon and WMT is trading at reasonable prices, especially when considering that it is partially a tech company.
I believe there is plenty of room for BOTH John. Fare and open competion is the very foundation of capitalism. That, for me anyway, is why I was socked to the core by what happened to Amazon yesterday…who is next.
Who is safe?
Your apparent trivializing of the impact of Amazon on small businesses and brick and mortar stores is grossly disparaging to then and calls into question your analysis of the overall market. I guess you failed , somehow, to postulate how the market will react when 60% of small businesses fail? I wonder what Amazon will trade at when these displaced employer/employees go for jobs? Maybe, greeters at Walmart? Parking lot attendants? I hate to be sarcastic but your remark reminds me of a policy statement of sorts that was made by AMZN when acquiring Whole Foods in that they will only home deliver to the deserving “upper end of the market.”
Full disclosure: I own no AMZN stock but am a Prime member. My holdings are in income based REITS and bonds; so, I want everyone to do good in the US economy and not just one that used sales tax and predatory advantages to take over the vast retail market. BTW, do your readers know that Amazon has yet to pay a dollar in dividends? (and probably never will like BRK or TSLA.) Guess they need more money to drive more small businesses out. Prez Trump is right to listen to state’s representatives and not stock guru’s with an apparent shortsightedness to find a violation of the anti trust statutes.
Newage… I don’t know how old you are but I’m 64 and ALL your complaints against Amazon I’ve already heard years ago except they were all blaming Walmart for the damage to Main Street.
Greed killed Main Street.
The markup in these little towns across America is OUTRAGEOUS and all because the customer had no choice…unless they wanted to wait weeks for the USPS.
Amazon and the Technology that drives them now have made every aspect of consuming cheaper and more efficient…INCLUDING the USPS. The problems at the USPS have NOTHING to do with Amazon. (Check their retirement commitments) Amazon, like EVERYONE else, has negotiated contracts that were approved by the government. POTUS has attacked Amazon because of a personal vendetta against the owner of Amazon and the NYPost. Until yesterday, a POTUS attacking a publicly traded company purely for personal or political reason would have been met with OUTRAGE from every corner of the political spectrum. Surely, my beloved father, the most loyal and conservative Republican to ever live is rolling over in his grave.
It appears to me that walls are being built and ALL of our bridges EVERYWHERE are burning and if WE THE PEOPLE don’t wake up very soon the LEAST of our worries will be the USPS.
Ask yourself this…what happens to the USPS when the HUGE windfall that Amazon is for them decides they will just ship everything with UPS or Fedx?
How do we invest when our whole nation is being swallowed by lies?
We are about to lose NAFTA COMPLETELY!
Let that sink in.
Mexico has had enough of OUR crap.
Those caravans are LEGALLY entering…THE SHINNING CITY ON THE HILL. They are fleeing a country who’s government and social structure has been DESTROYED in no small part to OUR deportations…where do ya think all those gang bangers went? We flooded them with gangs who are raping and killing everything that doesnt bow down to them.
Where is our morality…?
Someone told me to look in the mirror the other day to see the evil there. I do see the evil there every morning and what I see is an AMERICAN. An American who used to be proud of his country and everything it USED to stand for.
Walls and hate will take us down an UGLY road and when it ends it WILL NOT BE PRETTY.
“If liberty was a little girl, how would she like us now?”
How we make money going forward is anyone’s guess? I’M buying Canadian but…

Take my advise, don’t listen to me.
Isn’t there a big country risk with South Africa ? The African Congress is passing
a law that will take the land away from White landowners and give it to the
South African government. Won’t Naspers be affected by their location in
Capetown ? And what about racial violence that would erupt.

Yes, I have a hedge fund lawyer in the family from South Africa. He buys N.Y. real estate with African money because people are leaving it in droves. You can’t walk outside unarmed and their house has a metal cage like foundation to keep the restless natives out. On the other hand, they’re developing gold mines at the same time, as are the Chinese. Many of the white farmers were murdered, and the blacks that took over let the farms go to seed.
There is a risk, I don’t know what the size of the risk is. The risk is mostly that the South African government could pass legislation specifically designed to take more taxes from Naspers, though most of Naspers’ assets are not domiciled in South Africa (and their Tencent shares are held offshore), so I don’t know what the legal risk is, in the end. That’s true of any company domiciled in a country where you’re worried about the rule of law, but the risk is probably greater for Naspers than for some others because they’re so huge relative to the size of their “home” economy. I’d say that their subsidiaries that are local businesses, their pay TV and news operations in Africa, are at the most risk, and usually there’s quite a bit of back-channel stuff going on between large corporations and the governments under which they live that hopefully reduces the real risk… but never say never.
Travis –Thanks for your comment about the local businesses that face the big direct
risk of operating in South Africa. pschelker
Travis, I read your February 2nd Friday file that included comments about IIPR and IIPR/PA. Thank you for this Friday File follow-up on IIPR; believe I’ll add a bit to my portfolio.
I picked up WEED at two cents. It’s a gamble but it got pumped by some stock picker today so I figure it’s a good bet. I only got ten thousand shares. I was itching to buy more but I didn’t want to risk any more.
With regards to Amazon’s attack from the obviously unhenged leader of the free world, costing them over 100 million dollars in losses in one day I have to wonder why there hasn’t been a warrant issued for his arrest on securities fraud charges? Were I a shareholder I sure as hell would be looking to join a class action law suit.
I don’t believe any president in the past has even talked about a publicly traded company openly, much less attack them with such HUGE lies aimed at hurting the company financially.
Totally baffled at how many so called ‘conservatives’ are willing to stand idly by while ‘their’ president runs wild in the Whitehouse?
Cash isn’t king just yet but they are polishing the crown now…if you don’t have cash ya better have a big pile of gold, me thinks.
Chet
What you have lost it completely.
It would also be interesting to see who is buying Put options the day before the POTUS goes off on company specific tirades?
