A solution for payment of the wallI have had it up to here with all this discussion about ’the wall’ . Here is my proposal:
Why not have an assessment to pay for the wall. There are 15 million taxpayers that earn over $100,000 per year. An assessment of $400 each for taxpayers in this category times 15 million equals 6 billion, the cost for the wall. Is that too much to ask for, to end all this bickering.
It could even be a progressive or graduated assessment so that individuals on the lower end of the $100,000 scale pay less than $400.

That’s what taxes are, assessments for the operation of the government. The most recent tax cut, which disproportionately benefitted those who make well over $100,000, tallies up at about $1.5 trillion over ten years.
The widely touted $5 billion number for a wall is financially negligible in the context of the federal budget, (though it’s a government project in an extremely complicated environment, so would doubtless have massive cost overruns), but in my view it is primarily a symbol and a publicity stunt that is easier to rally behind or against than rational immigration policies and reform. The fight isn’t about money, it’s about symbolism and priorities and, now, about “winning.” The higher the profile the fight becomes, the less likely it is that a rational solution comes to pass.
