Is Blockchain a technology to invest in, and if so, what are the leading companies to research?

Blockchain is an interesting and possibly transformative technology that could become foundational for the next generation of online data transfer and security. I wouldn’t say I’ve identified any stocks that I think will lead, partly because just about every technology and financial company is exploring blockchain. The biggest challenge for me is that the notion of “blockchain” or “cryptocurrency” is very broad and isn’t really owned by any one organization or company, so it’s more of a fascinating trend than an investable one.
At least, that’s where I am now. We’ll see what the next year brings.
I know IBM and Microsoft have invested fairly heavily in blockchain, and it seems to be suited for pharmaceuticals and food supply traceability, but didn’t know if there were any smaller companies that had some innovations in that area. I’m steering clear of cryptocurrency, but think blockchain has potential for future value. Thanks for your response, Travis.

Funny how I did some homework on this topic just last month! I am inclined as well towards investing in blockchain technology rather than cryptocurrencies. I even shared this viewpoint with a couple of millenials that live in our 400-plus apartment building: tenants will come and go but the company (a REIT) that owns our building will not stop collecting rent. But of course the concept was lost on the youths that perceived that their coins ARE the future and the coolest thing to invest in. Never mind the platform on which they run.
That being said, you might want to check on the company holdings of the 3 blockchain ETFs I looked into — BLCN, KOIN & BLOK. I was surprised by the industry cross-section that these companies represented, more international than US, I think. A handful are clearly developing/providing the infrastructure while several are investing in if not already using blockchain tech in their businesses. And then there are the “unsung heroes”, the slew of semiconductor companies that make blockchain transactions possible.
RIOT and MARA were way up this morning. I think MARA went up to 40% then went down and settled to a nice 31% gain. RIOT went up 23% then settled down to 17% gain.
SHOULD RIOT BE BOUGHT NOW?
