Mine is a biased opinion based on the last crash (2008-2009) wherein the average working stiff saw his/her 401K — invested in various mutual funds — melt down to almost nothing, if not negative after all the fees. I would suggest opening and moving your money to a brokerage account where you have full control to trade in/out of ETFs as needed. Assuming you’re thinking relatively safe haven during a downturn in the market or long-term assets, I would suggest ETFs in precious metals. For example, there are various ETFs for gold — bullion, platinum, palladium, tracking just the price, major miners, junior miners, etc. — to choose from. A more volatile alternative would be silver and other precious metals.
