As an older investor (74) I am interested in steady income for the future. Obviously, treasuries are not an option, but approximately 55% of my portfolio is invested in CEFs (closed-end funds[1]), with another 15% invested in regular ETFs. The rest is spread over a variety of investment types including REITs[2] (10%), precious metals (10%) (yes, Sandstrom is one of them), short positions (SDS and PSQ) (7%), and speculation (3%). Up until 4 years ago I traded 75 to 100 times a year chasing capital gains and averaged about 4% per year in gains (I’m a gambler at heart). I finally wised up when I turned 70 years old and began converting to consistent, income-producing positions that paid dividends[3] through good and bad markets. I’ve averaged 15.2% gains on the overall portfolio for the last 4 years. I no longer study the daily machinations of the market. I still monitor my portfolio daily, but no longer stay glued to the screen looking for a trade I could make.

I know this site is more about trading and speculation, but I have to believe there are other ”Gummies” in my age group that are interested in income over speculation, or a better balance between the two. If you would like to add your opinion, I’d like to hear it. Travis, I love this site and your style of no B.S. evaluation. If you could jump in here I’d love to hear your take on this type of investing.

At one time I subscribed to 8 different newsletters. I now subscribe to only 3. Contrarian Outlook, Investor’s Alley, and, of course, Stock Gumshoe.
