There seem to be a number of “breakthrough batteries’ and other electric wonders sitting in the wings just ready to take off. What say you?

There is a ton of research going on in energy storage, and this has been going on intensively for many years. Batteries traditionally have incremental gains, no major breakthroughs (but anything is possible). Other technologies tend to have bigger sudden changes, e.g. superconductivity had a tremendous sudden discovery in 1987 of “High Temperature Superconductivity” (I was working in the field at the time and part of a breakthrough team). The scientific world was turned upside down overnight, and is still excited about this field, but the economic impact has been slow and in no way a quantum leap in applying this technology. Although breakthroughs will occur, I personally am skeptical that any company will have a breakthrough that will instantly vault it head and shoulders above the field.
