written by reader Question for the Community about Elections

By herecomestherooster, September 2, 2020

I am very new to investing, and I am starting small. My question to you all is how you handle elections? I feel like I should sell everything the day before the election and buy back in after whatever windfall happens. I know that’s crazy talk, but I also know that certain sectors will drop if Biden wins. Any advice from you guys that really know what you’re doing?

I wouldn’t make any big move around the elections, the sentiment will probably swing wildly a few times between October and December and each of us is likely to be driven by personal biases to overreact. The economy and corporate profits won’t change dramatically from this year to next just because of a change (if there is one) at the top, though feelings will obviously be hot — strong emotion doesn’t usually make for good investment decisions.

If you want to bet your feelings about how November will go, and such bets can be hard to resist, try to keep those bets small.
