There have been a few legal changes in recent years that opened up private investing to non-accredited investors, and a lot of platforms that have sprung up to sell those smaller companies to investors (Crowdvest, EquityZen, Wefunder, etc).

Whether you can catch a unicorn or not with those early investments is another thing entirely — it’s not impossible, but the most obviously appealing startups who can scale quickly are much more likely to get grabbed by big VC companies who can support them and offer a lot more money.

I’d think of finding little pre-IPO companies as more of a hobby than a core investing strategy. Haven’t looked at that particular ad, though.
