Asian Stock Alert
I subscribe it for 3 months ending in Jan. 2010. I have been reading Tony’s comments on Asia stocks for a few years through Money & Market from Weiss Research (run by Martin Weiss).
The Portfolio Table on January 2010 Asian Stock Alert includes 17 stocks, among them there are 8 gainers and 8 losers and one new recommendation. I don’t have the overall performance. But is does not look impressive. He does not use a stop loss and normally hold stocks for a long time. His most favorite stock is EDU (gain 119 %, bought 12/12/2006), also the best performer in his portfolio. Most loss is from FXP (-88 %, bought 11/17/2008), it acts like an insurance according to Tony.
On the timing aspect, he does not seem to have a timing thinking. He sounds like a perma bull on China. On Nov. 20, 2007, After Shanghai Composite Index dropped 12 % from its record high, He sent an email in Money and Market titled: “Don’t bet against China”, it says: “I Wouldn’t Bet Against China Right Now! ……. In my opinion, betting against China is a fool’s errand. In fact, it might just be the single worst bet you could make today.“ On Sept 16, 2008, He still want to add more Asian stocks. On Oct. 14, Oct. 21, 2008 his bullish view was correct. But if you did not sell before the big drop, how much money do you have to buy more? However, on 11/17/2008, he bought FXP, and has been holding it to the end of 2009 with a loss of 88%! And as the Chinese stock prepared to drop on 1/15/2010, he instructed to sell FXP.
I have also been subscribing to Tony’s service since Weiss offered a free 6mo a while back. I like Tony and I enjoy his commentaries, but it seems as if his stock recommendations are pretty loose, almost careless, as if his interests are mainly elsewhere. He also has recommendations for stocks on exchanges that are not readily accessible to people in the US (despite his assurances that they are). I won’t be renewing. For China investments, my opinion is that Cabot and Robert Hsu (China Strategy) do a more thorough job of researching and then tracking/reassessing their picks.
Tony’s picks are generally poor and his options pick generally do poorly. I would advise all to stay away from Tony and his perma bull China stance and all Weiss Group services. Horrible stuff!
