The decision moose (http://decisionmoose.com/Home_Page.html) is one of the best values on the web.

Since 1996 there have only been 50 trades and ONLY about 5 were loosers — if you can beat that please post it here!

It is Free. In the last 5 years it is up 110% and in the last 12 months it is down 1% while the SPY is down 42% in that same 12 months.

All the prior trades on the first page so you don’t have to do a lot of probing and searching.

It trades very little – making it great for IRA’s or people who don’t like to trade a lot.

Contains no advertisements.

I have been trading it for 2 years and think it is one of the best services on the WEB — paid or free!

If you find anything better (or even close) please review it on the stock gumshoe!

This is an interesting site in that it just recommends a single ETF rather than a portfolio. (e.g. High Conviction) Although this site has a great historical record, I’m concerned that its last two picks in a row have been losses.

Like several market models that I have seen lately, it may be that this model has worked well in the past but is not well suited to today’s market. And given how much investor sentiment has changed — truly changed — over the last year, it probably shouldn’t be that surprising. (How many people among the general public still believe in ‘buy and hold’?) So my advice would be: watch with caution.

Secondly I rated the ‘Educational’ aspect as only two stars since the viewpoint is so strongly libertarian that it strikes me as unbalanced bordering on unhinged. I’m all in favor of free markets, but I don’t think the world is so simple that would be better off abandoning all regulations.

I’ve been following the Decision Moose for a while now and find the site extremely useful. The site is free and provides a fantastic weekly update for what’s going on in the markets and various summaries. I would continue to go to the site for these updates alone, but the site also offers an ETF allocation model that is free as well. I’m not going to write about the ins and outs of it here, but it is fully explained on the website.

I have “paper” traded the site’s recommendations and they have done well. For free … the site is fantastic!!! It’s easily one of my top 5 favorite investing websites!

I found Decision Moose a month or so ago via this website. I am stunned at the simplicity and good investing sense presented throughout Dirlam’s website. One of the few without hype AND he has a good sense of humor.

He recommends against jumping into a recommended ETF if it’s been several weeks since it was recommended. However, I did a little homework and plunked out a couple thousand into EPP, his current hold. I have made about 8.5% in a matter of weeks. I do have a trailing stop, just in case it goes south! I am waiting for him to switch, then will plow a bit more money into his recommendation. Everything he recommends makes sense, just get the timing right – which apparently he does quite well.

I have subscribed to (and cancelled) several highly-hyped newletters, some of which are reviewed on this site. Decision Moose is far better, and at a much better price!

Latest news: http://www.proetf.com/ [now taken down] (@proetf) caught stealing the free Decision Moose information verbatim and charging $200 for something that’s available for free!!!

You’d think he’d at least kiss the moose while he’s making sex to it!! 🙂

Update to my earlier review: After switching from EPP to ILF, a temporary setback (Brazil suddenly imposed a 2% tax on foreign investments) and a small temporary loss, but that has been recouped and I am sitting in profit again.
Decision Moose also weathered (and solved) the plagarism/identity theft issue so that his website remains largely open and free. It’s a mere $26 to sign up for the password protected portion that he pens weekly.
I am happy to be among the first to subscribe at this VERY reasonable price for such great thinking. Way more value given for the dollars he receives from the readers.
Personally I think the “average” investor owes this man a great deal of gratitude for freely assisting those of us who cannot afford (and waste) money on high priced hype.

The Moose is always an interesting and thought provoking read. The author has a great sense of humor and the results speak for themselves. Some might be turned off by the author’s libertarian viewpoints, but I enjoy his reasoned assessments of politics and their possible affects on the markets. He is a small voice of sanity in the very noisy crowded marketplace of investment newsletters. The website is also obviously a labor of love (its still practically free) and I am thankful that the author takes the time to share his knowledge and analysis.

I subscribed in January 2010, and he has had two picks. The latest pick has been on fire. I purchased options on the ETF and the pick is up 50% on the options. $26.00 for the year– the price is more than reasonable. Some others have commented on his point of view on the markets but it doesn’t bother me at all. It offers insight and he has been right on. A good investment for me that has already paid for it self at least 50 times over.

Decision Moose author Jim D. shows great insight and ability with his formula though U.S. Small Caps were NOT the place to be this past week of 03 through 07 May to continue a small trend. One week does not a trend make and yet trending AWAY from China because of fears of an interest rate increase, there, does not do the MooseFormula much good. Please follow/read link:

Formula needs to favor Asia more. A tweek in the direction of greater growth and fiscal restraint is in order to make an excellent formula even better to make more recent MooseCalls the more accurate for our Intermediate Moose. Possibly even more emphasis on Precious Metals [the group (Palladium, Silver, in ADDITION to the current Gold)] would be another excellent refinement to continue an excellent track record which has, admittedly, floundered a bit of late. Time for a good tweaking of the formula by Master Jim.

Weekly ETF system written by a former Undersecretary of the US treasury, Bill Dirlam. Great weekly commentary. The Moose, however, has had a run of bad picks since Fall of 2009 due to poorly timed switching (he switches on Mondays and stop losses are not given with this model). However for $25/yr, this can’t be beat.

I subscribed based on all the 5-star ratings. The Decision Moose portfolio value is about the same as March 2008. It failed to profit during the stock market bull beginning in March 2009 or the previous collapse.

PROS: It’s cheap, easy to follow, and has CLOBBERED the SP 500 for the last 10 years: Moose +648, SP500 -3 (yikes). Tell me who wouldn’t want to be up 648% for the last 10 years. Cons: the last 2 years the system has underperformed the SP500. Still, I am up 648%, while you buy and hold suckers are crying.

I subscribed to DecisionMoose for one year, but have been tracking him for free for the past year. Have always found is insights quite enlightening, although his political viewpoints get in the way for me sometimes. For the most part his performance has been pretty good I feel, although I’ve never acted on his recommendations. Perhaps it’s time to rethink that!

I have subscribed to Decision Moose for the last two years. He has an excellent track record and is very easy to follow. You only do one trade at a time between 8 different ETFs. The only thing I do different is to use leveraged ETFs. In 2010 I made 30% and 2011 13%. Very happy with him and hope to continue with his service for many more years.

It seems to just be a little late with the switch recommendations. It is a momentum prediction system and it does not work very well when the momentum shifts are frequent and short lived. I like the general idea and theory of the analysis, and it is cheap, but pretty much quit using it.
