Run by Anthony Mirhaydari, previously from Markman Capital and also a contributor to MSN Money. Focus is financial commentary and stock/ETF picks, divided by simple and ‘spicy’, or Core and Explore.
Pros: The market analysis is very interesting and sheds light into Anthonys economics background, the site is excellently designed, the daily news delivery and twitter feeds are great.
Cons: The performance of the picks on the whole over the past year are less than steller.
1) Total performance for this year (active and closed positions)as of writing is worse than SPY
2) frequent buy/sell recommendations means transaction costs will hurt unless you are on a low priced plan. Long positions are not usually more than a month old.
3) economic theory and market performance often does not line up, leading to 1. his logic seems sound, but the market does not reach that way most of the time.
4) over-leverage means mistakes are costly.
5) the ‘active’ portfolio at month end (which he highlights on his website for everyone) focuses on the last month where the performance was > than SPY, not the last month. While those numbers may look impressive for the selected month, the closed positions are usually not as shiny.
Overall it’s an unsubscribe for me.
His picks in the early months were a little wonky and unstable but they are picking up and seem to be right on. I have been really impressed these past couple of months and for 25 a month its a steal for what you are getting! He is really active in in his updates and unlike some newsletters his economic background sets his writing apart. I would recommend this to everyone and hope the reviewer takes another look because to me this is a harsh review of a really good newsletter. ” Subscribe today”
