Since there’s no comments on this one yet, I thought I’d start a discussion on it. Just started a trial membership for 30 days since their analysis seems a bit more numbers based than most newsletters so I figured I’d take a look and see.
Of the 8 recommendations they have open, 7 are up and 1 is down only 1.5%. If 1 share of each holding were purchased at the time of recommendation, total holdings would be up 9.5%. Doesn’t seem too shabby for a new newsletter that just started end of Sept.

How have your investments gone since covid and have you stuck with the service? I got an ‘invitation’ to Hidden Alpha, which I assume is perhaps a rebranding? It could be different because he doesn’t mention small caps, and in his spiel only mentions quite established companies. 90 days for free, along with his ‘Stock X-Ray machine’. I’m not particularly interested in small caps, and this seems to be geared toward established companies.

Is anyone making money following this “Gents'” portfolio and monthly recommendations?

How has it hidden alpha been doing YTD in 2022? Maybe Yannick can tell us – seems 2022 so far not good for almost any system. Does this letter even continue as he now is promoting something called Perfect Stock Detector.

There is nothing hard about evaluating HIGH ALPHA if you do a little work. Going through the archive of its newsletters/alerts, a subscriber has access to every single buy and sell recommendation the service has made since its inception in Sep-2019. I assembled such a spreadsheet to readily assess the quality of the advice given for their actual buy and sell recommendations. I just updated it through Oct. 14, 2022. The profit in that little more than 3 years is a paltry 9.8%. A simple investment in an S&P500 fund would have made 23.9% in the exact same period. Those are cold hard facts, repeatable by any subscriber willing to do the work.

I further note from that spreadsheet that when HIGH ALPHA recently hawked this service — which they describe as their “premiere service” — they highlighted a huge number of “recommendations” that in fact were never made in the HIGH ALPHA service. I pointed this out to Altimetry in an email, and they asked to speak to me on a specific day. I gave them my phone number and a 45-minute appointment during business hours on the day they asked for. They never called and never communicated again.

I am not criticizing the company’s tool, the Altimeter. The claims of what it can reliably tell you are vastly overrated in my opinion, but at the bottom line I find it a useful tool that I am glad to have in my toolbox in guiding my own decisions. But the service HIGH ALPHA is not a tool. The service is specific investment advice that they charge thousands of dollars for when the advice is demonstrably not very good at all. I’ve been investing for over 35 years now . My background is as a scientist and researcher, and I actually enjoy investigating the various investment advice services. The evidence shows that most are not very helpful despite their always lofty claims. HIGH ALPHA is among the worst in a sample of over 50 recommendations, and yet it is also among the most expensive such services.

This is not to say there are not some investment advice services that are good — worth what they charge even to a highly seasoned investor. I find the best of these services do provide valuable expertise in certain niches that go well beyond my own.

Incidentally, do not confuse “HIDDEN ALPHA” for “HIGH ALPHA.” They are two different investment advice services provided by Altimetry. HIGH ALPHA is hugely more expensive and supposed to be better advice. Having determined that HIGH ALPHA offers poor advice , I’ve not put in the time to do a similar analysis of HIDDEN ALPHA. I have read numerous analyses from both services, and I think I see the fatal flaw for why their actual recommendations end up so weak. The fact they don’t see it after several years may be the blackest mark of all against the quality of their advice.

just finished watching the latest video presentation by Litman for his Hidden Alpha service . He is touting the LGN businesses as the next booming industry and gives a free recommendation buy for BKR. I am glad I have a subscription to Gumshoe and avoided subscribing to Litman”s service for a deal of $49 for 12 months, after reading here.
