I took advantage of OptionTraders ‘free two week trial subscription’ after losing 25% of my investment capital getting my feet wet with simple call options on ‘my’ selected stock picks. It’s been two weeks and due to James Browns option picks, I have recouped all of my original losses and then some. The OptionInvestor is not just one service. They have more than six Option traders and as many different style option programs , all priced individually with prices ranging from 29.00 to 49.00 dollars per month. Since I’m a novice at this type of investing, I am choosing to go with the most basic service which uses basic Puts & Calls. it’s important to me to have detailed instructions on when to get in and out including the risks involved so to be succesful you must follow their program daily. Another investment plan they offer deals with ‘LEAPS’. These are long term options up to the year 2014. LEAPS investing is more conservetive and does not demand daily monitoring. I am already building my portfolio with this program. I know two weeks is not a long time to evaluate a service such as this but I made enough money to salvage my original portfolio during two major market corrections (March 1, 2012 through March 13, 2012) That to me is worth signing up for a paid subscription. These guys are definately worth taking a look at.

I have been subscribing for years, just to read Jim Brown. The rest of the writers are less useful, but he is worth it!

I joined yesterday, but after accessing my $49.95/month subscription I wasn’t able to do so again. It said my charge card was out of date (which it was not). I didn’t get a response to either of my emails, so I planned on calling today. I finally received an email a short while ago, and was given a different ID & Password than those I had chosen. I used what they had given me, and it wasn’t accepted. I may still have to call them. From the reviews I’ve read, I got the impression that Jim Brown is the best option advisor, compared to the others. I’ll upadate this when I get to use
the website. Have any of you had similar problems?

I made $535 the first week I subscribed. I like Tom Hughes articles just as well as Jim Brown’s articles. I have only subscribed for one month. I may not be able to afford paying for an entire year, nor am I sure I need to do so. I am more interested in getting someone elses perspective.

I’ve been subscribing to Option Trader’s Options with short expiration times for the past five months, and I’ve made money on every one of their recommendations. The founder, Tom Hughes is ill, and can no longer spend 7 days a week working for his subscribers. I hope he can get someone to help him. There are other good writers. I have nothing but praise for Option Investor. I’m a subscriber to Bill Spetrino’s BIO forum, and I often mention that I use Option Trader to supplement what I get from the Bill’s forum, and Inner Circle (focuses on Leaps).

Is this service still offered? Recent posts, including my own, cannot find this service called Option Advisor….. and PRIOR to all the positive posts, I did find this about James Brown’s settlement with the SEC, reported by the Denver Post in 2001:
Littleton man fined in ‘Net fraud sweep
By Aldo Svaldi
Denver Post Business Writer
March 2, 2001 – The Securities and Exchange Commission said Thursday that a Littleton man who made misleading performance claims on three investor Web sites was among those caught in a nationwide Internet fraud sweep.

James Brown, 52, president of Sunset Investment Group Inc., didn’t admit wrongdoing but agreed not to violate SEC rules in the future. He agreed to pay a $70,000 fine. Brown couldn’t be reached, and his lawyer didn’t return a call seeking comment.

Another man named in the case, Austin Tanner of Westchester, Ill., who operates a company called Pinnacle Capital Advisors, has not reached an accord with the SEC.

The case involved three Web sites operated by Brown: OptionInvestor.com, SplitTrader.com and NetBulls.com. The sites provide stock and market analysis, and publish newsletters offering stock analysis, trading strategies and trading recommendations, according to the SEC.

The SEC said Pinnacle marketed the three Web sites, and Tanner served as a contributing editor to OptionInvestor.com from September 1998 through June 2000.

Tanner couldn’t be reached for comment.

The SEC brought the action against Sunset Investment as part of its fifth Internet fraud sweep. The sweep involved 11 enforcement actions against 23 companies and individuals who the SEC said used the Internet to defraud investors. Both publicly traded securities and privately held companies were involved. The frauds included “spam” e-mails, electronic newsletters, Web sites, hyperlinks, message boards and other Internet media, according to the SEC.

Some of the perpetrators used the Internet to pump the market capitalization of stocks by more than $300 million and raised $2.5 million from investors in the United States and abroad, the SEC said.

Sunset Investment Group was not accused of fraudulent stocktrading strategies, said Katherine Addleman, an attorney with the SEC’s Denver office.

Rather, the SEC claims Brown and Tanner used misleading information to get people to subscribe to OptionInvestor.com, which has about 15,000 paid subscribers. The other two sites are free but generate revenue from advertising.

According to the complaint, from October 1998 through May 2000, OptionInvestor.com claimed returns ranging from 60 percent to 240 percent for subscribers who followed their trading philosophy and trading recommendations.

The sites published glowing testimonials and supposedly used a “team of experienced traders,” the agency said. In reality, the returns were hypothetical and the team of experts was, in fact, Brown, the agency said.

“We spoke to a number of people who followed the sites and who were disappointed they weren’t able to glean the same results as were touted in getting them to join,” Addleman said.

The SEC alleged that the performance claims were false and misleading because the site indicated that performance reflected actual results, when in fact the claims were hypothetical. The calculations were based on hindsight that made it impossible for subscribers to achieve similar results, the agency said.

The bottom line for investors using the Internet: “You have to be very skeptical of recommendations you get from an online adviser or research analyst,” Addleman said. “They may have a personal interest that’s not disclosed.”

That advice could apply to any investment adviser, but the threat is magnified by the Internet, which is why the SEC has made monitoring it a priority recently.

“Because the Internet has potential for such widespread dissemination, there’s more potential victims for such fraud,” Addleman said.

Other companies named in the sweep were based in California, Texas, Arizona, Utah and England. The schemes included false promises of an imminent initial public offering, baseless financial projections and false track records.

in first line of as-yet unapproved post, I made a mistake: should be OptionInvestor, not Option Advisor….. could you please amend that?

I am not finding anything recent on OptionInvestor.com except for old legal filings. Travis, this is one of your 5 “5 Star” ratings; maybe it should be downgraded or removed? Thanks
